Rising Stars: Meet Karan Ouren of Fergus Falls

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karan Ouren.

Hi Karan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Karan is a self taught artist, she began painting in 2007. Karan started out painting florals, landscape, even tried drawing people. It was 2013 when she found that painting abstractly would bring her joy, it wasn’t all about the finished piece as it was about the process of creating the work of art, if the piece created was a success, that just made it even better.
Karan has exhibited her art in individual and group shows in MN., ND., and CO., mostly in various Galleries, and Museums. My first exhibit was at a cafe in ND., it was both wonderful and scary at the same time.
Over the years Karan has sold 100 works of art, from very small to large pieces, yes I kept count.
Karan served on the Board at Lake Region Arts Council in Fergus Falls, MN for 3 years.
Karan was awarded the Career Development Grant twice, funded through the McKnight Foundation, awarded through the Lake Region Art’s Council.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting out was difficult, being self taught proved to have many complications, not knowing how to blend paints or create the depth that I desired or even finding the focus point of the pieces. Karan did a lot of research, watched 100’s of painting video’s and worked with other artist and as time went on, it all began to make more sense.
Karan was diagnosed with MS, fibermyalgia, chronic migraines, these illnesses created their own challenges to say the least, the one that I struggle the most is with is chronic fatigue. Feeling tired all the time made it difficult to feel creative or even have the desire to paint.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Abstract painting/mixed media artist Over the years Karan has taught many classes on abstract art, mostly local, group classed, individual classes and home schooled students, as well as students from Productive Alternatives, (various physical and/or emotional issues) as well as other organizations, helping those who might not have otherwise had the opportunity to have the hands on art experience.
