Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon & Nicole Mattison.
Hi Brandon & Nicole, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
The farm that we live on has been in the family for over a hundred years. It has always brought life to our family members that have lived on and worked the land. Shortly after my (Brandon) dad took over managing the farm, we transitioned from conventional row crops to become certified organic. He saw a gap that needed to be filled which, years later, opened a door for my wife and I to allow for further growth.
Fast forward to 2020… My wife (Nicole) had experienced traumatic births of both our children that resulted in chronic illness. We were frustrated with trying things that didn’t provide lasting relief and felt God leading our farm and family in a new direction. We sold most of the farm equipment, switched our crop land over to pasture and took a leap raising our own beef. We wanted to sustainably raise the cleanest meat we could. It started small, with just a few head of cattle, but our desire to provide healthy food to our family has grown into a larger mission to share this passion for clean eating to those around us.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No big leap of faith is ever smooth… We have struggled at times with being different. Living in a rural area, it hasn’t always been easy to stick out from our neighbors. However, it has turned into such a great opportunity to share what we are doing with others and to learn from one another.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a certified organic, regenerative farm that raises grass-fed grass-finished beef and lamb at this time. We also raise organic free range chickens and eggs. We provide farm tours to allow those that are interested to come out and be a part of our community.
We are a small family run farm owned by my family (Brandon, Nicole, Paul & Jeanette). Along with our two kids, we are the ones who care for the animals, manage our booth at the farmers markets and small farm store, process orders and all of the other small details that make this business run.
The land we have been blessed with provides us more than a business, it has provided us a closer connection to God. We are leaning more on Him and the land He has given us.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Baling hay, small square bales, with my Dad and Uncle Norris for cattle feed when i was 6 years old. I remember trying to help move the bales and when the rack got too full for me to help they would build a fort for me to ride on top of the hay load while they finished filling the rack. It is so fun to see it come full circle now. Our two kids work alongside us on the ranch whether it is pitching hay, moving livestock or even planting trees… we are side by side, making lifelong memories.
