Community Highlights: Meet Josh Kirkpatrick of Capitol Barbers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Kirkpatrick.

Hi Josh, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Capitol Barbers is the longest running barber shop in the U.S. It began in the basement of the second Capitol Building in 1883, by Walter Gassoway. The current Capitol is the third Capitol Building. The barber shop was moved into the State Office Building in 1932, then recently relocated into the MN Transportation Building in 2024. It has always remained on the Capitol Campus. My dad, Ken Kirkpatrick, took ownership of the barber shop in 1972. In 2016, he went into semi-retirement and I took over and currently still own it.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been a lot of ups and downs through the history of the shop. We have many clients who have worked on the Capitol campus. We also have clients from the surrounding areas and cities who come and use our services. The pandemic really slowed business for us and the general traffic on the Capitol grounds. Though many have begun to return to working in person, the Capitol buildings are still noticeably less busy than they were before the pandemic.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Capitol Barbers?
We offer hair cuts and styling for both men and women. We also offer traditional barbering services like shaves and beard trims.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
We are very proud of our long standing tradition of quality service and friendly staff.
