Today we’d like to introduce you to Karla Santiago-Rodriguez.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, and I graduated from the Inter American University of Puerto Rico School of Law in 2010. After law school, I worked as a defense attorney for the Puerto Rico Department of Justice, representing the government in both state and federal court. It was intense, meaningful work that sharpened me as a litigator.
But when I moved to Minnesota, something shifted for me. I started seeing immigrant families in our community who were trying to navigate this incredibly complex system — people who were working hard, building lives, doing everything right — and they had no one to turn to who spoke their language or understood what they were going through. I realized I had something they desperately needed: I was a citizen, I speak Spanish, and I understood the law. That felt like a responsibility, not a coincidence.
That led to working as a paralegal for an immigration attorney, and through that work, the real passion ignited. I studied extensively — taking seminars, CLE credits, and diving deep into the immigration system through both formal training and hands-on practice. In 2020, I founded Santiago Legal LLC with a clear mission: to exist to improve the lives of immigrants in the United States.
Every case I take on reminds me why I started this firm. These are people building something real in this country, and they deserve to have someone in their corner who speaks their language and understands the system.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been smooth at all. Launching Santiago Legal during COVID was brutal, honestly. I was at home with my family — my son was three years old — and we were all figuring out how to exist in the same space while I was trying to build a law firm from nothing. I didn’t have the financial resources I needed. I started from scratch, but I put everything I had into it anyway.
The emotional weight of this work is real too. These are people’s lives, their families, their futures. You carry that with you. And then there’s the practical side — I realized quickly that knowing immigration law inside and out doesn’t mean you know how to run a business. That was humbling.
So I invested in myself. I found a coaching group that specializes in helping small law firms scale and manage effectively. I committed to learning the skills I didn’t have — everything from client management to financial planning to building systems that actually work. It’s ongoing, and it’s not always comfortable, but I knew that if I was going to serve my clients the way they deserve, I had to get better at the business side too.
Looking back, launching during a pandemic with a young child at home and no financial cushion sounds insane. But it was also exactly when I needed to do it. Because the need was there, and I couldn’t wait. Every struggle along the way has reinforced what we’re here to do — provide ethical, bilingual legal advocacy that empowers immigrants to dream bigger, live without fear, and access the same opportunities as any citizen. Every client deserves safety, dignity, and the chance to thrive. That belief got me through the hard parts, and it still drives me every single day.
As you know, we’re big fans of Santiago Lega LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Santiago Legal LLC is an immigration law firm based in Minnetonka, Minnesota, serving immigrant families across the state. We handle a wide range of cases — green cards, citizenship, work permits, asylum, VAWA petitions, U visas, and deportation defense. We also represent clients in ICE detention cases, bond hearings, and immigration court proceedings. Whether someone is just starting their journey toward legal status or fighting to stay in this country, we’re built to handle both sides of that spectrum.
What sets us apart is simple: we speak our clients’ language — literally and figuratively. Most of our clients are Latino families, and when they walk into our office, they’re not met with legal jargon or a cold intake process. They’re met with someone who understands their culture, speaks Spanish, and genuinely cares about what happens to them. That matters more than people realize, especially when someone is scared or overwhelmed by the system.
We’re also very intentional about education. We put out a lot of content through our blog and social media because I believe an informed community is a stronger community. People need to know their rights, especially right now — what to do if ICE shows up at their door, how the system works, what options they actually have. That’s part of our mission too.
What I’m most proud of is the trust our community has placed in us. Hundreds of families have walked through our doors, and that’s not something I take lightly. We exist to improve the lives of immigrants in the United States. That’s not a tagline — it’s what gets me up in the morning and what drives every case we take on.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
You know, I think the most important quality for my success has been my ability to stay focused on what actually matters: my clients. I’ve developed a mindset around growth and purpose that shapes how I approach business and life. But at the end of the day, my real measure of success isn’t about me or the firm. It’s about seeing my clients thrive.
When a family gets their green card, when someone wins their asylum case, when a person can finally stop living in fear — that’s what drives me. That’s what keeps me going through the hard days. It’s easy to get caught up in building a business, in metrics and growth, but if I’m not genuinely invested in whether my clients win, then what’s the point?
That client-first mentality isn’t just something I say — it shapes every decision we make at Santiago Legal. It’s why we invest in education, why we stay available, and why we fight hard in court. Because their success is our success.
