Exploring Life & Business with Alec Korby of Korby’s Construction & Handyman Services LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alec Korby.

Hi Alec, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Ever since a child I was going to projects & estimates with my dad. My late father owned Korby’s Construction & Exterior located out of Perham, MN. He would let me get a bug juice from the gas station everytime we went out to a job, I was a little too young to be swinging a hammer so I mostly played with my action figures.

My father passed when I was 10. Fast forward 8 years it was time to graduate high school. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do for a career at the time but knew I enjoyed my construction class & misc shop classes like woodworking & welding. So I decided to attend NDSCS Wahpeton where I got a degree in Building Construction technology & Construction Management Technology. Just before graduation I accepted a position with Roers construction where I worked for 5 years, 3 of them as a superintendent running commercial jobs.

I liked my job but I felt like it was time to make a job transition, I didn’t know exactly what that transition was, but I knew my skill level and accountability. I was extremely scared at first to leave my career job with good benefits to try something that has no garuntee to pay the bills. So I started Korby’s Construction & Handyman Services. I have been extremely blessed with the amount of work put on my plate, and every job is a new opportunity to not only grow in my expertise but also grow relationships with new people.

Not only did my father own his own construction buisness but my grandfather did as well. Times were a little different with grandpa being a war vet. But still a guy you could rely on to fix anything wrong with your house. So technically I guess I’m 3rd generation Korby’s Construction. And looking to carry on the family name.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say overall I have been extremely fortunate. Everyone has issues in life but no major roadblocks.

Fishing

Nothing beats being out either by yourself or with some good friends just enjoying the weather.

And once you get lucky enough to catch a fish, nothing else matters for those few seconds. It’s like a mute button for everything going on in the world.
