Meet Jakkie DeCorsey of Northern Edge Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jakkie DeCorsey.

Hi Jakkie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The work that I do as a therapist is the very same work that saved my own life. Over 10 years ago, I found myself in the office of a therapist that I could feel actually cared about me and my life. And after sorting through and processing past hurts, trauma and barriers to living a life that I could experience safety and joy and love within, I brought up that I wanted to do this work with others too. And they said “you would make a great therapist”, which was the first time I had felt supported in directing my own life. So I did it; I went out and got my Master’s degree and did everything I needed to do to become a psychotherapist. Along the way I began running my own business, and clinicians who thought in similar ways and/or wanted to practice in similar ways reached out to begin working with me. The ship has steadily grown because of this, for which I am so so so grateful for and excited by.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No. Generally speaking, I’m unruly and devoted to moving in my own way, otherwise I don’t want to engage with whatever it is that’s in front of me. When going to school to be in such a regulated field (for good reason!), I pushed back on the things that didn’t make sense or that I didn’t understand and that didn’t always go over well with teachers and colleagues. I felt a lot of angst around doing anything to maintain the “status quo” in the field of psychotherapy because I could see how the system was built and how it has hurt many people. That angst pulled some like-minded folks close and at the same time it pushed away a lot of folks. I think that asking a lot of questions and being ever-curious is a strength and at the same time can make things much more intense and complicated, both internally and externally.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We’re a group of therapists that are practicing modalities that are outside of standard psychotherapy, or “talk therapy”. Each clinician specializes in their own modality that has made a personal difference in their own life, including psychedelic assisted therapy, biofeedback therapy, EMDR, somatic therapy, family & couples therapy, and equine assisted therapy. What sets Northern Edge Counseling apart from others is that we are highly relational in the ways we show up for clients because we understand the importance of being a human when being with someone struggling. To heal from relational trauma and past hurts requires you to be in relationship with someone who can be present with some of the most personally turbulent, confusing, or challenging parts of yourself. And that’s our strong suit at Northern Edge Counseling; presence, unconditional positive regard, and radical curiosity and acceptance.

I would love for readers to know that even if they aren’t sure where to start but know they want change, we’re ready to help. That they don’t have to feel alone in the face of the difficult aspects of their life, and that they are worthy of support and care.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I love the podcast “Wild Geese” by Anna Howard, always great content and lots of points of self-reflection are readily available.
