Community Highlights: Meet Kim Anderson of The Gymnastics Physio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Anderson.

Hi Kim, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey with The Gymnastics Physio started from my own experience as a former collegiate gymnast. Going through the demands of the sport firsthand—training, competing, and dealing with injuries—I saw how challenging it was to find healthcare providers who truly understood the sport.

After finishing my gymnastics career, I became a physical therapist and worked in a more traditional clinic setting. I quickly became most passionate about working with gymnasts. What stood out immediately was that a lot of the conventional rehab approaches didn’t translate well to their needs. Gymnasts were often being told to rest and take time off, or they were being progressed in ways that didn’t prepare them for return to sport. Parents and coaches were often left out of the rehab process entirely. There was very little collaboration, which led to confusion around training modifications, return-to-sport decisions, and overall expectations. It created a disconnect between what was happening in the clinic and what was happening in the gym.

That combination of lived experience as an athlete and professional experience as a PT made the gap really clear to me. I knew there had to be a better way to bridge performance and rehab for this specific population.

In 2024, I started The Gymnastics Physio with the goal of doing exactly that. My mission is to provide the care that I wish I had when I was a gymnast.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting my own business was definitely intimidating. I felt confident in my background in physical therapy and gymnastics, but the business side was a completely new challenge. I leaned heavily on my support system throughout that process, and I’m incredibly grateful for the clients who trusted me early on with their care!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Gymnastics Physio?
I’m a mobile physical therapist, which means I work with gymnasts directly in their gymnastics facility, fitness center, home, or virtually. Whether an athlete is recovering from an injury or looking to enhance performance, my mission is to provide compassionate, one-on-one care that’s tailored to each gymnast’s individual needs.

What really sets The Gymnastics Physio apart is both my background and my approach. As a former gymnast, I truly understand the sport. I know what skills demand, how gymnasts train, and what it takes to safely return to gymnastics. This perspective allows me to connect more effectively with gymnasts, coaches, and parents to create plans that are realistic for the gymnast’s goals.

What I’m most proud of is the trust that’s been built. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a gymnast overcome the adversity associated with injury and return to doing what they love with confidence!

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
One of the biggest changes is the shift from reactive care to proactive care. Physical therapy is no longer just something people seek out after an injury—there’s a growing emphasis on prevention, performance, and longevity. The “cookie-cutter rehab program” is becoming outdated, and there’s more focus on tailoring treatment to the individual athlete—their sport and their goals. I think this is a really positive shift, because it means athletes—especially gymnasts—are finally starting to get care that actually matches the demands of their sport.
