Inspiring Conversations with The Miles Family Dragon Forge Games of Dragon Forge Games

Today we’d like to introduce you to The Miles Family Dragon Forge Games.

Hi The Miles Family, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The love of all things “gaming” has been in our family since childhood. Missy with a love of board games and Tim with a level of “nerd gamer” that back in the 80’s was… just as cool as Stranger Things makes it look. Or, so we like to believe. Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons was life. As Tim and Missy separately grew into adulthood, we also found a love of music with 80’s/90’s rock n’ roll. Which is how we met. Missy joined Tim’s band and we quickly discovered the mutual passion for all things tabletop. PC games, TCG’s (trading card games), RPG’s (roll playing games) and board games were commonplace at our dinner table. The children were raised on the love of family, games, and God. They cut their teeth on Magic and Pokemon cards, and polyhedral dice, quite literally.
The favorite place to get birthday and Christmas presents was the local game store, Dragon Forge Games. The Miles’ had been customers of that store since it first came to Brainerd 12 years ago. Upon learning that the owners were selling, we decided to give it a shot. Having a big nerd family made it possible to relocate to a much bigger space. Our vision for it was to build a welcoming community and give people and other families a place to connect, discover and share their love of games.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I find it hard to focus or complain much about the struggles (there have been some) because so far, they have been good problems to have. We are working long hours spending a lot of time with each other. Anyone who works with family understands that has it’s own challenges!
Very recently we had to implement employees because of the growth we’ve experienced.
There are some days where we feel we have maxed out our space and wish we could expand even more. We’ve even partnered with a fantastic neighboring business next door to add to our table space and start our coffee and espresso bar. Which getting the necessary permits needed from the government entities has been an incredibly long road.
As I said, I don’t feel we can complain, but we do get tired!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Dragon Forge Games?
Dragon Forge Games is so much more than just a game store. Yes, we do sell board games and acessories. We do specialize in tabletop, rpg’s and wargaming. We do sell (and buy/trade) trading cards. Our inventory for all of these is extensive! But our goal is to provide a space and atmosphere where anyone, can come into a large, bright, themed (castle and dragon muraling throughout!) and feel welcome! And also…Play. More. Games!

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
