Rising Stars: Meet Pat “Doc” Dougherty of Minneapolis/St. Paul

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pat “Doc” Dougherty.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m currently playing in a group called Sawtooth Witch with Haley Fleming on fiddle.

Haley and I have been playing together for years. We toured in a band called Fairfax, AK together.

After a while I started to search for a new sound. I wanted a mix of everything I loved as a kid with all the stuff I was getting into at the time. It ended up being this blend of hill-country blues and house music.

Haley and I would often be in a few bands at a time back in the Fairfax days. Even when I played in Elle PF I had a solo project she would sit in with that would actively gig in taverns along Highway 61, so when the Sawtooth Witch sound started to form I immediately asked her to join.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When you’re actively trying to do something different it’s never going to be a smooth road but it’s way more rewarding.

I like to call it the scenic route. Being an independent artist is often harder but it’s more sustainable in today’s landscape. You can maintain a level of control that allows you to experiment and make the music you actively want to see in the world.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We are a genre bending band that blends fiddle, fingerstyle guitar, and electronic inspired dance beats. We try to take something from every page in the American songbook: folk, hill-country blues, cosmic country, and even a little bit of house music.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Always stay true to yourself and trust your intuition.

Every time I’ve gone against my gut I’ve lived to regret it.
