Hi Timothy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Budget Tax Solutions began in 2005 as a simple side hustle with just three tax clients. The following year grew to about twenty, and from there it steadily expanded—largely through word of mouth and long-term relationships. What started as a small, after-hours endeavor has grown into a firm serving around 200 clients in 2026, with roughly an 80/20 mix between individual returns and business entities such as S-Corporations, partnerships, and nonprofit organizations. The growth has been organic, but always grounded in a clear mission.
That mission came from seeing a consistent frustration among taxpayers: a lack of transparency. Too many people shared stories of handing over their documents, waiting for the work to be completed, and then being surprised with a bill they didn’t expect—but felt obligated to pay. From the beginning, I wanted to change that experience. At Budget Tax Solutions, clients are given a clear understanding of pricing up front so they can plan and “budget” accordingly. Over the years, that approach has built trust, and pricing has remained consistent with only occasional adjustments when the scope of work differs from what was initially communicated.
At the core of everything I do is a desire to serve with what I often call the “heart of a teacher.” My goal is not just to produce accurate returns, but to help clients understand the “why” behind what’s being done. In some cases, that has even meant working myself out of a job—equipping clients with enough knowledge and confidence to handle their own filings going forward. That outcome isn’t a loss; it’s a success. It reflects the belief that informed clients are empowered clients.
In September 2017, I made the decision to step away from my full-time job and devote myself fully to this work. Today, Budget Tax Solutions operates across three primary areas: tax preparation for individuals and business entities, payroll services for a select group of businesses, and bookkeeping for approximately 25 clients—many of them nonprofit organizations. One quote often attributed to Mark Twain resonates deeply with me: “There are two important days in a person’s life—the day they are born and the day they find out why.” Finding that sense of purpose in serving others through this work has been one of the most fulfilling seasons of my life, and it continues to shape the way I approach every client relationship.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is my wholehearted opinion that anything truly worth doing rarely follows a smooth or predictable path because meaningful work stretches you, exposes your limits, and requires growth that only comes through challenge. There are seasons where doubt creeps in—where you question whether you’ll be able to keep going—and other seasons where opportunity comes so fast you wonder how you’ll possibly keep up. That tension isn’t a sign something is wrong; it’s often evidence that what you’re building matters. The uneven road forces resilience, sharpens judgment, and clarifies purpose, and over time you realize that those highs and lows aren’t obstacles to success—they’re the very process by which it’s formed.

I already covered some of this in a previous question, but I’d like to add that it has been a primary goal for both myself and my company to have an attitude of service and putting the needs of clients and customers ahead of mine. That perspective influences how I interact with clients, how I approach challenges, and how I define success. It’s not just about completing a return or balancing a set of books; it’s about helping people navigate something that can feel overwhelming and giving them clarity, confidence, and peace of mind.
That foundation also shapes the way relationships are built within the business. I don’t see clients as transactions, but as people entrusted to my care for a season—sometimes many seasons. Whether that means taking extra time to explain the “why,” being transparent about costs, or even equipping someone to eventually handle things on their own, the goal is always to put their best interest first. I’ve found that when service is the priority, growth follows naturally, and the work becomes far more meaningful than simply checking boxes—it becomes part of a larger purpose.
