Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Hurney.
Alexandra , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been drawn to art for as long as I can remember. In kindergarten, my teacher told my mom I would become an artist someday—and that feeling has stayed with me ever since. I went on to study art at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art. During that time, I participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions and became deeply involved in the local art scene.
After moving to Fairmont with my husband, I continued to grow my art career and connection to community. My work spans a wide range of styles, mediums, and textures—from large-scale murals on walls, windows, and ground surfaces to detailed drawings, paintings, pet portraits, and memorial pieces. Whether I’m creating for myself, for others, or designing through social media, art is a part of my everyday life.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I would describe my art journey as relatively smooth. Of course, there are always ups and downs—projects that don’t turn out as planned or ideas that don’t fully come to life—but that’s an essential part of the process. It’s through those moments that I continue to grow, explore, and evolve as an artist. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to keep creating, both for myself and for others. Not everyone gets to do that, and it’s something I’m truly grateful for.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I like to think that I specialize in the essence of creation. While my primary mediums are painting and drawing, my work extends far beyond that into a wide range of projects for both myself and others. I frequently take on commissions, especially pet portraits, human portraits, and memorial pieces, which I create through both painting and drawing. When someone trusts me with a piece, I’m fully invested in bringing their vision to life and creating something meaningful they can truly connect with.
I’m also known for my involvement in community art. I’ve participated in murals and collaborative projects throughout my local area, and I’m proud to serve on the boards of the Red Rock Center for the Arts and Imagine Martin, helping support and grow the arts within my community.
I take pride in the work I create—because if I didn’t, I wouldn’t continue to pursue it so passionately. One of my greatest accomplishments is building connections through art and sharing that joy with others. I hope to inspire people in their own creativity and everyday lives. I strive to bring color, energy, and a sense of playfulness into the world.
What sets me apart is my willingness to explore. I don’t confine myself to one style or medium—I enjoy experimenting, trying new things, and embracing the unexpected. And along the way, I bring a bit of humor and lightheartedness into my work, because creativity should be both meaningful and fun.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me in life is my friends and family. While art is a huge part of who I am, it comes second to the people who support and surround me. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their constant encouragement and belief in me. They push me to keep creating, to grow, and to be the best version of myself—and that support means everything.
