Hi Alex, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well, I’ve been a cannabis enthusiast for most of my teenage and adult life. I remember having an unexplainable fascination in the plant the first time I ever grew one, which was in 5 gallon buckets of dirt in the woods in the back yard when I was probably a jr. in high school. I would go back and check on it every few days and be so amazed by how much it had changed since the last time I had been there. I would just sit on a log and watch it for the longest times it felt like, just observing each and every change down to the tiniest detail before I was ready to head back to the house. The satisfaction I felt just by growing one little plant is unexplainable to those who haven’t grown anything themselves before. From that point on I knew I was hooked as a grower and my dream developed into basically “wanting to live in a High Times magazine”.
Fast forward a few years and I’m living in Denver starting in 2010. After working this and that odd job I met more and more people and got connected to some growers, which isn’t a tough task in Denver. I eventually found myself trimming bud in a dispensary for such little pay it’s embarrassing and helping friends in their home grows, which were now newly legal in CO. I got more and more connected and a few years later I was helping run an 84,000 sq’ warehouse.
Fast forward again, life and times changed and I’m back living in northern MN waiting for the laws to finally get to where they’ve suppose to have been all along. A big part of me wanted to grow again when I came back and turns out, so do a lot of other people! I was always hearing “When weeds legal I’m going to grow for sure!” or “I really want to open a dispensary!” which got me realizing how much these people are going to struggle trying to get proper equipment and means to do what they want to do. I have friends who have a large scale grow near by so I figured I’d open up a grow store because there really isn’t anything like that in north central MN. I figured I’d sell the pick axes to the gold miners, instead of trying to compete with everyone else trying to do what I’ve already done.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Pretty smooth so far. I’m a first-time business owner so of course there have been unforeseen challenges that have to be solved as they arrive and as long as I can stay smart enough to learn from early mistakes I think I’ll be just fine. My biggest struggle in the beginning had been knowing what I needed to have on my shelves. There are millions of products to grow plants out there, so knowing what to spend the little money I had on what got to be stressful, that’s for sure!
