Community Highlights: Meet Brenda Oja of Empowering Restoration LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenda Oja.

Hi Brenda, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My story begins in 2014 when I decided to return to school to obtain my masters degree in counseling. I had been a stay-at-home mom and had started my own small craft business making wooden signs and doll furniture. My business was successful and I decided to put that money toward my masters degree along with other part time jobs I had. I obtained my degree in 2018 and worked to gain hours for my state license. While under supervision for my license I learned the ins and outs of running a small private practice and once I completed my hours, I started to feel the itch to open my own practice. Through support and encouragement of others I took the step of faith and started on the journey. Now after just over three years in private practice, I have 4 other providers who practice with me and we are part of a collaborative called the Mental Health Connection that includes several other private practices who work together to support each other and our clients.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Stepping out in faith to open my own practice included some speed bumps along the way. Those included gaining access to insurance networks so I could see and support clients. Another speed bump included finding rental space the was affordable for such a small business.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The quality that I find to be the most important in the therapy role is to be client-centered and to meet clients where they are at. To Empower means to give someone the power, authority, and confidence to do something. The goal of therapy at Empowering Restoration is to support clients in accessing and cultivating their internal strengths, enabling them to take proactive steps toward personal healing and restoration.
