Daily Inspiration: Meet Matt Peterson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Peterson.

Hi Matt, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey really began with a simple passion for hard work and helping people take care of their outdoor spaces. I started Peterson’s Outdoor Solutions in Barnes, Wisconsin, as a traditional lawn care and landscaping business. In the early days, it was all about grit—handling everything from routine mowing and seasonal cleanups to site clearing, brush hauling, and operating equipment like mini excavators to get properties back into shape.

While I loved the work, I quickly noticed a significant gap in our regional market. In northern Wisconsin, many people own second homes, cabins, or large seasonal properties. When they look for help maintaining or watching over those investments, they are often left relying on a casual “neighbor or cousin” arrangement, which can lack consistency, standard operating procedures, and proper liability coverage.

I realized that what property owners actually needed was a deeply professional, reliable partner they could trust implicitly when they weren’t around.

Because of that, I’ve spent the last couple of years deliberately restructuring the business. We are moving away from just being a standard landscaping company and transforming into a comprehensive, systems-based property management and caretaking operation. Today, we focus on providing professional oversight, verifiable reporting, and standard operating procedures for seasonal and year-round properties across Northwest Wisconsin—serving communities from Barnes and Gordon to Hayward, Cable, and Iron River.

It’s been an exciting evolution from running a lawn mower to building a professional caretaking system that gives property owners true peace of mind. We pride ourselves on setting a higher standard, proving that property management in the Northwoods can be just as sophisticated, organized, and reliable as any high-end corporate service.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road, but I think any business owner will tell you that the bumps are where you learn the most.

One of the biggest initial challenges was just navigating the sheer physical and logistical demands of working in Northwest Wisconsin. The weather here dictates everything, and when you are handling large-scale property cleanouts, site restorations, or storm debris removal, you are completely at the mercy of the elements. Managing equipment maintenance on trucks, trailers, mini excavators, and chainsaws while staying on schedule across a massive, multi-county service area takes a lot of coordination.

However, the deeper structural challenge came when I decided to shift our business model. Transitioning from a standard, transactional lawn care and landscaping business to a high-standard, systems-based property caretaking operation required a massive mindset shift—both for the business and the market.

In a rural or seasonal market, there’s a deeply ingrained culture of hiring a casual “neighbor or a cousin” for property help. Breaking through that norm to explain why a professional, fully insured service with strict standard operating procedures and verifiable reporting is worth the investment takes time.

It also meant turning down certain types of standard work to make room for our new, restructured caretaking model. Rebuilding your internal systems, refining your asset protection protocols, and rewriting your service standards while keeping the lights on is like trying to rebuild an airplane while you’re flying it.

But every struggle forced me to tighten up our operations. It made us less reactive and much more strategic, ensuring that when a client trusts us with their property, they are getting absolute professionalism, not just a casual favor.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At Peterson’s Outdoor Solutions, we specialize in high-standard property caretaking, asset protection, and comprehensive estate management for seasonal and year-round properties across Northwest Wisconsin. While our roots are in heavy outdoor work—like site clearing, professional branch trimming, storm debris removal, and post-construction site restorations—we have evolved into a systems-based property management firm.

We serve a wide geographic footprint, including Barnes, Gordon, Minong, Wascott, Drummond, Cable, Hayward, and Iron River. Our core specialization is bridging the gap between standard property maintenance and elite, professional oversight.

What We Are Known For:
We are known for our absolute reliability and thoroughness. Whether we are operating a mini excavator to restore a residential site after a major installation or managing a massive, multi-phase estate cleanout and property restoration, we bring a rigorous, structured approach to every job. Our clients know that when we are on their property, things are being done safely, legally, and to an exacting professional standard.

What I Am Most Proud Of:
I am incredibly proud of our successful business restructuring. It takes a lot of courage to move away from a traditional, high-volume lawn care model to build something more sophisticated. I’m proud of the fact that we have established a reputation where premium clients and regional real estate networks trust us with their most valuable investments. When a homeowner leaves their cabin for the winter and hands us the keys, that level of trust is the ultimate badge of honor for me.

What Sets Us Apart:
What truly sets us apart can be summed up in a simple phrase: We are not just your neighbor or your cousin with a lawnmower.

While the Northwoods has plenty of casual, handshake-based property help, we operate on a completely different level:

Strict SOPs: We use standard operating procedures for everything we do.

Verifiable Reporting: Our clients receive clear, documented proof of our oversight, which is invaluable for long-distance property owners.

Professional Risk Management: We maintain valid insurance documentation (COIs), require clear written estimates, and utilize formalized contracts to protect our clients’ assets and liabilities.

We bring corporate-level accountability and sophisticated organization to the rugged, unpredictable environment of outdoor property management.

What makes you happy?
On a personal level, what makes me truly happy is a mix of two things: the satisfaction of a hard day’s work and the quiet, rugged beauty of Northwest Wisconsin.

There is a unique joy in taking a property that is overgrown, neglected, or disorganized and using your own hands, tools, and equipment to restore it to its full potential. Seeing a perfectly cleared site, a safely trimmed canopy, or a beautifully leveled piece of land at the end of a long day is incredibly fulfilling. I love the tangible nature of this work—you can look back at 5:00 PM and see exactly what you accomplished with your time and energy.

Professionally, what makes me happiest is the relief and peace of mind I’m able to give to our clients.

Many of the property owners we work with are juggling stressful lives elsewhere, or they are letting go of a family estate, or they are constantly worrying about what’s happening to their northern cabin during a rough winter storm. When we send a client a verifiable, detailed report showing them exactly how their property was taken care of, and they reply with an overwhelming sense of relief—that is incredibly rewarding. Knowing that my business’s systems and high standards allow someone else to sleep easier at night gives all the hard work a genuine sense of purpose.
