Inspiring Conversations with John Arms of Voyaguer University

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Arms.

Hi John, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I got my start in fractional work in 2018 after years as an entrepreneur, agency founder, and marketing leader, when I began to see a major shift in how experienced talent could create value outside the traditional full-time model. What started as my own move into fractional leadership quickly became something much bigger. I realized thousands of highly capable professionals were looking for a smarter, more flexible, and more autonomous way to work. That led to co-founding Voyageur University, where we’ve helped professionals transition into fractional careers while also helping companies understand the power of fractional talent. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of becoming one of the early educators and advocates in the fractional movement.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have absolutely been obstacles. Fractional work is still a relatively new model, and anything that challenges the traditional status quo comes with friction. Entrepreneurship itself is never a straight line, and we’ve navigated everything from market education to the disruption of COVID to now helping professionals think through the implications of AI on work. But this has always felt like mission-driven work to me. Helping people reclaim career freedom, autonomy, and confidence in their own ability to create value makes the obstacles worth navigating.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Voyaguer University ?
Voyageur University exists to help experienced professionals rethink work and build more self-directed, abundant careers through fractional leadership and independent consulting. We specialize in helping accomplished corporate leaders, operators, marketers, HR professionals, and executives transition into successful fractional businesses with practical education, real-world tools, and a strong community of peers. What sets us apart is that we’re not theorists—we’ve actually done this work. We were among the early builders and educators in the fractional movement, and everything we teach comes from lived experience, tested frameworks, and years of helping others make the transition successfully. Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is that we’ve become a trusted guide for people at major career crossroads. This is deeply mission-driven work. We’re not simply teaching a business model—we’re helping people reclaim agency, confidence, freedom, and a new relationship with work itself.

How do you think about luck?
Luck absolutely plays a role in everyone’s life—both good fortune and misfortune—and I think both bring lessons. I’ve been fortunate to find incredible people who believe in this work, students who were ready for change, customers who saw the value, and partners and investors who believe in the mission. But I also believe luck tends to favor movement. Very little of this is done alone; I stand on the shoulders of many people who have helped shape the journey. And there’s an old truth in all of this: luck often shows up when you’ve been working incredibly hard for a very long time.
