Today we’d like to introduce you to Catherine Lang.
Hi Catherine, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
While my career began in college, my love for the social media industry started long before that. I have always been a creative person, and I always will be.
When I was younger, I became interested in photography and fell in love with capturing those moments that make your heart smile. I’ve always loved scrapbooks too-looking back on memories and moments that sparked joy. When social media began to grow, I saw it as a virtual scrapbook that could be shared with others.
While most kids loved social media because it was fun, I loved it because of the questions it sparked in me. Why did this ad appear on my feed? How did the algorithm know what I was interested in? For a while I let those questions sit in the back of my mind, thinking they were simply curiosities.
However, when it came time to choose a career path, I already know what mine would be: marketing.
Once I started college, I began applying what I learned in the classroom to my own social media accounts. I became fascinated by the metrics. Why did one post receive more engagement than another? What type of content resonated most with my audience? The more I learned, the more I wanted to understand the connection between creativity, strategy, and results.
Later, I took on an internship with a church I attended, which gave me the opportunity to put my skills and knowledge to the test in a real-world setting. After graduating, I worked in contract positions across a variety of industries, including dentistry, ministry, real estate, and more. I loved the challenge of learning new industries and combining that knowledge with my marketing expertise to help each organization connect with its audience.
Looking back, curiosity has been the common threat thought out my journey- from wondering how social media worked as a kid to helping businesses use it strategically today. As I continue to grow both personally and professionally, I hope to stay curious, continue to be a life-long learner, and continue finding new ways to comic creativity and meaningful results.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Life is never easy, so I can’t say it’s been a smooth road. But honestly, I wouldn’t want it to be. The challenges we face are often what shapes us into the people we become. They build resilience, teach us valuable lessons, and help us grow in ways that success alone never could.
Being early in my career and stepping into an already saturated industry, it was difficult to get my foot in the door. There were times when I questioned myself and my abilities as I struggled to find a full-time position. Like many recent graduates, I found myself wondering if I was doing enough or if was good enough.
However, I was always able to fall back on one thing: my skills and work ethic. Even during periods when I was working at a brewery just trying to make ends meet, people continued to come to me for social media advice. I was asked how the business could improve their online presence, grow their audience, and create more engaging content. I found myself helping with everything from strategy to hands-on creative work like graphic design and content creation.
Those experiences were a constant reminder that I wasn’t the problem- the challenge was. Simply breaking into a competitive industry. Seeing people trust my expertise and seek out my help gave me the confidence to keep going, continue learning, and stay committed to my career goals.
Looking back, that season taught me resilience. It reinforced my belief that growth often comes from difficult moments, and that challenges can become some of our greatest teachers. The road hasn’t always been easy, but it’s played a huge role in shaping the person and professional I am today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
While I continue to grow and learn- not just about the industry, but also about my own strengths and interests- I find myself leaning into specialties I never expected when I first started my career.
Currently, I would say one of my strongest specialties is graphic design. I love taking the time to understand a business, its style, and its brand identity, then translating that into creative visuals that resonate with its audience. There’s something rewarding about bringing a brand’s personality to life through design and helping them tell their story in a way that feels authentic.
What I’m most proud of, however, is how much I have grown in videography. Through that process, I’ve learned how to approach a project with a client’s vision in mind while also bringing my own creative perspective to the table. Finding that balance between strategy, creative perspective to the table. Finding that balance between strategy, creativity, and audience engagement is something I truly enjoy.
More than any specific skills, though, I pride myself on my work ethic and curiosity. I’m always looking for new ways to improve, learn, and view content through a different lens. I don’t believe in setting for “good enough,” and I’m constantly challenging myself to grow both creatively and professionally.
I think what sets me apart is my ability to combine creativity with adaptability. Having worked in businesses across a variety of industries, I’ve learned how to quickly understand different audiences, brand voices, and goals. I enjoy the challenge of stepping into something new, learning everything I can, and finding creative ways to help businesses connect with their audience and stand out.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
As we know, the marketing and social media industry is constantly growing and evolving. One of the biggest shifts I see is a strong demand for authenticity. Not only online, but in how people connect with brand and each other face to face. Audiences are becoming more intentional about what they engage with, and I think that will continue to share how brands show up.
Because of that, I see authenticity playing a major role in marketing over the next few years. Brands that are able to communicate in a real, transparent, and human way will be the ones that stand out in an increasingly crowded digital space.
I also see AI having a major impact on the industry. My hope is that it continues to be used as a tool to support creativity and efficiency, rather than replace the human side of storytelling and connection.
Lastly, I think we’ll see an ever stronger emphasis on brand identity and consistency With so much content being produced every day, having a clear and recognizable voice will be key to building trust and long-term relationships with audiences.
Overall, many of these shifts are already starting to happen, and I think they will only continue to grow in the years ahead.
