Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Cayer.
Hi Christina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
For the past four years, I have proudly operated a gluten-free cottage food bakery in Minnesota, turning a personal challenge into a passion-driven business. After being diagnosed with celiac disease ten years ago, I faced a significant learning curve as I adapted traditional baking methods to create delicious gluten-free recipes. Because of my diagnosis, my entire home is maintained as a completely gluten-free environment, ensuring the safety and quality of every product I make.
My love of baking began long before my diagnosis. I grew up surrounded by talented bakers, including my father, both grandmothers, and my great-grandmother, all of whom spent countless hours in the kitchen creating homemade treats and family recipes. Their influence inspired my passion for baking and provided the foundation for the skills I continue to build today.
Combining my family’s baking traditions with years of experience mastering gluten-free techniques, I established my bakery to provide safe, high-quality baked goods for others who need or choose a gluten-free lifestyle. What started as a necessity became an opportunity to share delicious gluten-free products with my community while honoring the baking legacy passed down through generations of my family.
My last name is Cayer (pronounced care) and I decided to name my bakery Cayerful Gluten Free Treats as everything is gluten-free in my home due to Celiac Disease so it’s very
“careful”.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Running a gluten-free cottage food bakery has been a rewarding experience, but it has not always been an easy journey. Unlike traditional baking, gluten-free baking requires specialized ingredients that behave differently and often require extensive testing to achieve the right taste, texture, and consistency. Many gluten-free ingredients are significantly more expensive than their conventional counterparts, which increases production costs and can make pricing products challenging.
In addition to the financial investment, operating the bakery requires a substantial commitment of time and energy. As a full-time special education teacher, I balance my professional responsibilities during the day at school and then in the evenings and weekends with baking, planning, purchasing supplies, marketing, and fulfilling orders. There have been many late nights and busy weekends dedicated to growing the business while maintaining the high standards necessary for a completely gluten-free operation.
Despite the challenges, the opportunity to provide safe, delicious baked goods for individuals with celiac disease and other gluten sensitivities makes the effort worthwhile. The experience has taught me perseverance, creativity, and time management while allowing me to combine my passion for baking with an additional source of income and a meaningful way to serve my community.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
