Meet Skylar Scheurer of Minnesota

Today we’d like to introduce you to Skylar Scheurer.

Hi Skylar, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m originally from Fargo, ND but spent plenty of time in rural ND as well growing up. I was always athletic but endured some injuries which limited my experience in sports past a certain point. I think that’s what gave me a passion for helping people with their physical bodies and helping them be able to do the things they love and stay as pain-free as possible. After high school I moved to Oklahoma City. Of all places to explore after “growing up”, I cannot even say why that was where I wanted to go, but the thunderstorms were awesome and I’m grateful for my experience there. I got my massage therapy training at the Integrated Massage Therapy College in Edmond, OK and moved back to Fargo after gaining about a year of experience at a very quaint spa called the Sweet Mimosa in Bethany, OK. I started off at a chain type of establishment after moving back to Fargo and quickly realized that was not for me and that I work best as my own boss. I rented from a massage clinic for a few years, then rented at a salon close to my home. After building and maintaining a very loyal clientele and finding that I could not possibly take all the referrals I was getting, I realized that Fargo was missing something- a massage establishment with a staff that you KNOW will utilize everything in their toolbox as bodywork professionals to bring real relief to each client. So, I started Fix Massage Studio a year ago. We don’t actually claim to “fix” anything. The name came from my clients. “I was hoping you could fix my shoulder”, “If you can fix my headache today that would be amazing”, and “Just fix me, Skylar” are examples of things my clients say quite often, so in a way my clients collectively named the establishment! We are currently building our staff and clientele- and we are having lots of fun doing it! I have since been working on creating a balance of being a business owner/busy massage therapist and having a life outside of work, being outside, and enjoying other creative endeavors.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road is never smooth for a new business owner! It’s a lot of learning, asking questions, and using your resources. A personal struggle for myself was conquering the fear of the unknown. Taking that initial leap and realizing that staying in the comfort zone wasn’t helping me grow as a person or a bodywork professional was important in overcoming that struggle of deciding to do what I truly wanted. Starting a new business is full of the unknown, and that’s such a common and natural fear that we all need to overcome.

From a more concrete standpoint, one of the main challenges I’ve experienced as a business owner is learning how to delegate. There are always a million things to get done and a ton of thinking ahead is required so it’s difficult at times for one person to do it all. I have learned that delegating certain things is crucial, however the hardest part is passing the baton to someone else and trusting them to put as much effort and love into it as the founder/owner would.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have a very full schedule of my own wonderful and loyal clients, and it’s because of my style. I’m lucky that the right people have found me and trusted me to work with them. My personal bodywork style centers around my passion to truly help the client. The difference with my style of work and what I train my employees on is the need to help the client and to have noticeable results from each session. If a client comes into our studio with specific issues, we are going to do everything we can to achieve some relief, not give a full-body massage and “focus” on the area of concern for 5-10 minutes, hoping it’s going to help. The drive to truly help each and every client is what sets us apart. Bodywork-wise, we are known for deep, therapeutic massage styles but we love a good relaxation massage or facial massage service as well! A lot of our clients have stuck with us because they “can’t find other massage therapists who get in there” like we do. We hear that quite a bit! I also encourage continuing education to stay well-rounded as a massage therapist and to keep adding to the toolbox of techniques that we can be using to provide relief.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I love to fish! I may not be catching trophies or posting them online, but it’s one of my favorite ways to be in touch with nature and relax. Even if I’m not catching anything I’m happy to be outdoors and relaxing. And no, I don’t mind cleaning them.
