Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Rix.
Hi Melanie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The first time I received Reiki, I was running on empty. Between working as a special education teacher and caring for two young children, I saw Reiki as an occasional luxury, something I could treat myself to when life became overwhelming. What I didn’t expect was that one Reiki session would spark a much deeper journey of self-discovery.
That first Reiki experience opened the door to meditation, mindfulness, and exploring a variety of alternative healing modalities. I spent years learning, growing, and searching for practices that could help me live with more balance and intention in my daily life instead of only tending to myself when things got really stressful. Along the way, I explored many different paths, but Reiki kept finding its way back into my life, leading to me eventually becoming certified in Reiki I, II, and Master Reiki. Becoming certified felt like something that had gently fallen into my lap and I knew it would change our families lives.
Around the same time, many pieces of my life seemed to fall into place. My family moved to a peaceful, century-old farmhouse on a beautiful property that instantly felt like home. The property included a separate office building, and what began as an empty workspace slowly revealed itself as the perfect place to create a Reiki studio. As my Reiki practice deepened, that space transformed into Bluebird Reiki, a tranquil sanctuary where people can step away from the demands of everyday life and reconnect with themselves.
As life went on, Reiki became part of my family’s routine, it brought a sense of calm and grounding during some of our most challenging seasons. It didn’t remove life’s difficulties, but it helped us navigate them with more peace and resilience. That experience inspired me to create Reiki for Everyday Life, an online Reiki I and II certification course, because I want others to know that Reiki doesn’t have to be reserved for special occasions. It can be a simple, accessible practice that supports you and your family every day.
Looking back, Bluebird Reiki wasn’t something I set out to build from the start. It grew naturally from my own healing journey, a series of opportunities that seemed to arrive at just the right time, and a desire to create the kind of peaceful space I once needed myself.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. While Bluebird Reiki grew from a place of passion and purpose, building a business has come with plenty of challenges.
One of the biggest struggles has been learning how to wear so many different hats. As a special education teacher, I was comfortable helping and serving others, but running a business requires an entirely different skill set. Marketing, social media, website design, bookkeeping, and putting myself out there felt overwhelming when my true passion is simply helping people.
Another challenge has been trusting myself and the value of what I offer. Reiki is still unfamiliar to many people, and because it isn’t always widely understood, there can be a learning curve in helping others see how it might benefit them. I’ve had to grow my confidence, share my story more openly, and trust that the people who need this work will find their way to it.
Perhaps the biggest lesson has been learning that growth doesn’t always happen on our timeline. There have been moments when I’ve questioned whether I was doing enough or moving fast enough. But each time I return to the reason I started, to create a peaceful space where people can rest, heal, and reconnect, I find myself back on the right path.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Bluebird Reiki is a peaceful Reiki studio located on our family property, tucked away in a tranquil setting that feels worlds away from the busyness of everyday life. My goal has always been to create more than just a place where people receive Reiki. I wanted to create a sanctuary where people can exhale, slow down, and reconnect with themselves.
I offer Reiki sessions for individuals seeking relaxation, balance, and energetic support, but what I’m most passionate about is making Reiki approachable and accessible. Many people assume Reiki is something mysterious or reserved for wellness enthusiasts, when in reality it can be a simple, practical tool for everyday life. That’s why I also created my Reiki for Everyday Life course, helping people learn how to use Reiki to support themselves, their families, and their communities.
What sets Bluebird Reiki apart is the heart behind it. My background as a special education teacher has taught me the importance of meeting people exactly where they are. Whether someone is brand new to Reiki or has been on a healing journey for years, I strive to create an experience that feels welcoming, supportive, and free of judgment.
I’m especially proud that Bluebird Reiki has grown organically from my own personal journey. Every aspect of the space, from the peaceful studio to the way I work with clients and students, reflects my belief that healing doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes what we need most is a quiet place to rest, listen, and reconnect with ourselves.
If there’s one thing I’d like readers to know, it’s that Reiki isn’t just for times of crisis or burnout. It can become a gentle part of everyday life. I’ve seen firsthand how it can help create moments of calm in the middle of life’s challenges, and it’s an honor to share that experience with others through both sessions and education.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
There are so many people who deserve credit for helping Bluebird Reiki become what it is today.
First and foremost, my husband has been my biggest supporter and cheerleader. While I’m the face of the business, Bluebird Reiki truly wouldn’t exist without him. He has poured countless hours into transforming our separate office building into the peaceful studio it is today. Whenever I have an idea, he’s usually the first person helping me figure out how to make it happen. His encouragement, hard work, and belief in me have been invaluable.
I’m also incredibly grateful to my Reiki teachers and mentors. Each one has shared their knowledge, wisdom, and passion for Reiki in a way that helped shape both my practice and my teaching. They showed me that Reiki is more than a technique, it’s a way of living with greater presence, compassion, and trust.
I also owe a great deal to my family, friends, and early clients. It takes a leap of faith to support a new business, and many of them trusted me long before I fully trusted myself. Their willingness to receive sessions, provide feedback, spread the word, and encourage me through moments of self-doubt helped me build the confidence to keep moving forward.
Most of all, I’m grateful for every person who has walked through the doors of Bluebird Reiki. Each client has taught me something and reminded me why I do this work. Being trusted to hold space for someone during a vulnerable moment is something I never take for granted, and it’s one of the greatest honors of my life.
