Rising Stars: Meet De’Andre “JaeMyth” McKee of Minnesota

Today we’d like to introduce you to De’Andre “JaeMyth” McKee.

Hi De’Andre “JaeMyth”, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started out rapping and making my own music at the young age of 8 with my older cousin WestMo producing and making my beats. This would go on for 10 years straight until I started to do my very first show at the age of 18 at the Profile Center in Minneapolis. That one show would turn evolve into many shows, many tours, many different experiences that would shape my entire entrepreneurial knowledge, skills, and confidence. We would begin to record our music under the MajorFlow group name and Label Name MajorFlow Ent dropping mixtapes and albums really laying down the blueprint on how things were done on the Minnesota Music scenes having hot music and high performance stage presence. After years touring all through the midwest with the group in the early and mid 2000s and creating our very own shows in our city putting on other local artists for a long time, things came to a slow down during 2019-2020. Of course this is the covid era to which have the country would shut down making all touring artists go back their home states or be stuck wherever they were. During the whole covid era I noticed Minnesota wasn’t closing down the small music venues and dive bars, so I then turned to Djing to keep being relevant on the scenes while writing my own music and also to make some money during covid era and stay outside. Once I started Djing I caught on fast as to how the Djing side of the music business works a lot differently when it comes to doing business. I’m a natural at Djing Hip-Hop and R&B of course because I make that type of music so I naturally wanted to expand my Djing ability by playing into other genres like Latin music, Afro-beats, and even Pop music the kind of music that would be played on the radio, or even at a wedding. What started out as a side hustle grow into a full blown record label with a DJ department and I went legit with the company becoming a LLC. Now I perform my own music as original music with hot lyrical hiphop bars and can also play some of the dopest DJ sets that can pack a floor. From 2019 to present time I’ve Djed in some very big places in Minnesota like; The Pourhouse Uptown (currently The Green Room), The Union Rooftop, Crave Rooftop, The Exchange Lounge, Ties, Truck Park West 7th, Grand Ave Festival and more. I also recently performed my own music at the Fillmore and First Avenue in Minneapolis opening up for Snow Tha Product being tour support. Dropping my own music, Djing others and creating live events lead to me build not only my music career but my business career as well as both a Rapper and DJ.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road was a roller coaster of chaos of the process of the music industry. First, it was learning how to record and how to get a good mix that sounded next level and cutting edge at the time of recording them to stand out and be different and we achieved that. Before that we were just performing live with no vocals at all on the tracks. We’d show up to shows with what was essentially just a beat mix of the songs we were performing live. Then once we finally got a studio all the mixing and making things sound good came into play as I stated. The hardship was looking for a studio to record in and trust and trust our music being at that studio. The other hardship was buying studio equipment and as a group, pooling our money together was impossible because we didn’t have a natural space to hold equipment and no one could agree on holding the studio at one another house. Once I took the lead on the group all that would change though and I would eventually end up running the label alone and becoming the owner of it too. Becoming the owner and actually creating the LLC of it took a lot of time and effort because I went the whole was as far as getting the label funded and continuing to do things that wasn’t done as a group. Creating the LLC was a battle in its own, when your not shared the information on how to even start a business so doing all this going forwards is all free will and what to know how. Then you have now think in the mind of a business not the mind of an artist and I had to learn that change as well too and learn how to switch from both.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a Hip-hop Artist/DJ and a Music Industry Entrepreneur. I’m known for my stage name JaeMyth and my label MajorFlow Entertainment. I’m known for rocking high energy DJ sets and then performing my very own live performance somewhere in my DJ set totally by surprise. This is what sets me apart from the rest because I can out rap the best of the best and then turn around and hang with the best of DJs when it comes to rocking a party and crowd engagement. This is also what I’m most proud of as well, the ability to be a sharp rapper with bars of meaning and then work a DJ set of memorable songs and hype moments most can’t do. To have the ability to succeed in both lanes brings great jealously from others in my state that have tried to ride the same lane and failed so I take a lot of pride in being able to be great and both position is the hiphop culture that started it all.
