Life & Work with Sydney Wilton of Minnesota

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Wilton.

Hi Sydney, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey into the wedding industry started long before I officially launched my business. As a teenager, I began working in marketing and quickly discovered a passion for creativity, branding, and connecting with people. That passion led me to earn my degree in Design from the University of Minnesota, where I further developed my skills in visual communication and design.

After graduation, I started designing wedding stationery and quickly fell in love with the wedding industry. I realized I wanted to be more involved in helping couples bring their entire vision to life, so I earned my Certified Wedding Planning certification and later my Master Certified Wedding Planner designation.

In the spring of 2022, I launched My Event Buddee. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of planning and coordinating more than 100 weddings and events. What started as a small business has grown into a full-service planning and design company serving couples throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin, as well as destination weddings in places like Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and Tuscany, Italy.

Today, I combine my background in marketing, graphic design, and event planning to create personalized, memorable experiences for my clients. I truly love what I do and feel incredibly grateful to help couples celebrate some of the most important moments of their lives.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like any business, it definitely hasn’t been completely smooth, but I think the challenges have helped shape the business into what it is today.

When I first started, I said yes to almost every wedding that came my way. That was a valuable learning experience because it helped me figure out what types of weddings, clients, and services I truly enjoyed and where I could provide the most value. Through that process, I realized I was most passionate about working with couples who value design, organization, and a high-touch planning experience. It also taught me that not every client is the right fit—and that’s okay.

Over the years, I’ve worked with all kinds of personalities and situations. Weddings are emotional events, and I’ve certainly encountered a few challenging clients along the way! Those experiences helped me develop stronger communication skills, set better expectations, and create processes that lead to a better experience for both my clients and myself.

One of the biggest challenges of entrepreneurship has been the inconsistency that comes with running your own business. As a mother of three, there are naturally seasons that are busier than others, and learning how to navigate that has been an important part of my journey.

More recently, I’ve intentionally shifted My Event Buddee toward the luxury market. That means I receive fewer inquiries overall because my services aren’t the right fit for every budget, but the inquiries I do receive are much more aligned with my expertise and ideal client. It’s been a shift from focusing on quantity to focusing on quality, and I feel like I’ve finally found my groove and built a business that truly reflects who I am and how I love to serve my clients.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
What I do goes far beyond creating timelines and coordinating logistics. One of the things I am most passionate about is creating a personalized planning experience for each couple I work with.

Over the years, I’ve developed a variety of creative processes, planning tools, and systems that help make wedding planning feel less overwhelming and more enjoyable. Every couple receives a tailored experience based on their needs, priorities, and personalities. I intentionally limit the number of weddings I take on so that I can give each client my full attention and be fully invested in their celebration.

What I’m most proud of is the relationships I build throughout the planning process. Planning a wedding is a very personal experience, and I often spend more time communicating with my couples than some of their closest friends and family during that season of life. By the wedding day, I know their vision inside and out, and they trust me to execute every detail seamlessly so they can be fully present and enjoy the moment.

On the wedding day itself, I am there from start to finish, managing vendors, overseeing setup, solving problems before anyone knows they exist, and making sure everything comes together exactly as planned. My goal is for my couples to feel completely taken care of and able to enjoy their day without worrying about the details.

What sets me apart is the level of care and connection I bring to my work. For me, this isn’t just about planning an event—it’s about building genuine relationships. Many of my past couples have become friends, and some still keep in touch years after their wedding day. Those lasting relationships are one of the most rewarding parts of what I do and a reminder that this work is about so much more than a single day.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I’ve always been incredibly Type A—in the best possible way! I was organized, motivated, and constantly keeping myself busy. In high school, I actually took a personality assessment that suggested I would make a great wedding planner. At the time, I remember laughing because I had no idea how someone even became a wedding planner, but looking back, it’s funny how accurate that prediction turned out to be.

Growing up, I was very outgoing, creative, and hardworking. I loved being involved in different activities and was always the person organizing projects, planning events, or making sure things got done. By my senior year of high school, I was working four different jobs because I genuinely enjoyed staying busy and challenging myself.

I’ve always had a blend of creativity and organization, which is probably why wedding planning ended up being such a natural fit. I love creating beautiful things, but I also love systems, checklists, timelines, and making sure every detail is accounted for.

Not much has changed since then! Today, I still bring that same energy to my work. I’m bubbly, driven, detail-oriented, and genuinely passionate about helping people. The difference now is that I’ve found a career that allows me to use all of those strengths every single day.
