Meet Theresa Baker of Minnesota

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Baker.

Hi Theresa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been a hairstylist for over 10 years, but before entering the beauty industry, I earned my degree in Speech-Language Pathology and worked with autistic children and adults. While I loved that work, I eventually followed my passion for hair and built a career behind the chair. Over the years, I realized I could combine both of those worlds in a meaningful way. Today, as the owner of Larkspur Hair, a private sensory-friendly salon studio, I specialize in creating a comfortable, welcoming experience for clients of all ages and sensory needs. It feels like I’ve come full circle—bringing together my background in supporting neurodivergent individuals and my love of hairstyling to help people feel seen, understood, and confident.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve always joked that I have “job ADHD” because I’m passionate about a lot of different things and never felt like I fit neatly into one role. For years, I was constantly looking for ways to combine my interests in helping people, creativity, education, and community work. I finally found that balance with Steller Hair, where I wore many hats and was able to blend all of those passions. When Steller unexpectedly closed, it was a difficult and uncertain time, but it ultimately led me to create Larkspur Hair. Looking back, it feels like that challenge made space for something even more aligned with who I am and the kind of impact I want to have.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m the owner of Larkspur Hair, a private salon studio specializing in precision haircuts, curly hair cutting and styling, short haircuts, low-maintenance styles, and sensory-friendly services. My goal is to create an experience where every client feels comfortable, respected, and truly cared for—not just during their haircut, but from the moment they book.

What sets me apart is my unique background. Before becoming a hairstylist, I studied Speech-Language Pathology and worked with autistic children and adults. Today, I combine that experience with over 10 years behind the chair to provide thoughtful accommodations for clients with sensory sensitivities, anxiety, autism, ADHD, and other needs that can make traditional salon environments challenging.

I’m known for creating customized cuts that work with a person’s natural texture and lifestyle, helping them spend less time fighting with their hair and more time enjoying it.

I’m most proud of creating a space where people can show up exactly as they are. Whether it’s a child getting their first successful haircut, a neurodivergent adult finally feeling comfortable in a salon, someone embracing and learning to care for their natural curls, or a client finding a short style that finally feels like “them,” those moments mean the most to me. I believe great hair is important, but helping people feel safe, understood, and confident is what truly drives my work.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I’ve always loved working in Northeast Minneapolis. The artsy, casual, quirky, and welcoming vibe of the neighborhood really matches how I approach my work. I’m drawn to spaces where people can show up as themselves, and Northeast reflects that perfectly.

Being part of this community has shaped the atmosphere I create in my salon—relaxed, inclusive, and focused on genuine connection, where every client feels comfortable and at ease.
