Conversations with Crystal Sayen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Sayen.

Crystal, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started Crystal Sayen Photography almost 17 years ago because I loved capturing the little moments that tell a story. What began as a hobby quickly turned into something much bigger than I ever imagined.

Over the years, my business has grown right alongside my own family. I’ve been blessed to photograph babies who are now graduating high school, couples who have become lifelong friends, and families who come back year after year. Being invited into so many important moments in people’s lives is something I never take for granted.

Life hasn’t always been easy. Like many families, we’ve faced our share of challenges, including job loss, health struggles, and the loss of my mother. Those experiences have given me an even deeper appreciation for how precious memories really are and why photographs matter so much. They freeze moments that often pass by too quickly.

Today, my business is about so much more than taking pictures. It’s about preserving legacies, celebrating milestones, and helping families remember the seasons of life – both the beautiful and the hard ones. Nearly two decades later, I still get excited every time I pick up my camera, and I feel incredibly grateful that this little dream has allowed me to connect with so many amazing people and tell their stories.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Running a business for nearly 20 years means experiencing a lot of highs and lows, and I’ve had my share of both.

Like many small business owners, I’ve dealt with the uncertainty that comes with entrepreneurship – slow seasons, financial stress, balancing work and family life, and constantly adapting to changes in the industry. There have been times when I questioned whether I could keep going.

The personal challenges have been some of the hardest. Over the past few years, our family has faced significant health issues and the devasting loss of my mom. Those experiences completely shifted my perspective on life and business. There were seasons where my focus had to be on simply getting through the day and taking care of the people I love.

At the same time, those struggles have also shaped me into a more compassionate photographer and business owner. I understand on a deeper level how quickly life can change and how meaningful photographs become during both joyful and difficult times.

Looking back, I wouldn’t say the road has been easy, but I can honestly say it’s been worth it. Every challenge has taught me resilience, gratitude, and the importance of preserving the moments that matter most.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At Crystal Sayen Photography, I specialize in capturing the moments that matter most – newborns, families, milestones, seniors, and legacy sessions that tell a family’s unique story. My style is natural, timeless, and focused on genuine connection rather than trends that will fade over time.

I think what I’m most known for is the relationships I’ve built with my clients. I’ve had the incredible privilege of photographing families for nearly 20 years, watching babies grow into graduates and being invited back to document chapter after chapter of their lives. Many of my clients have become friends, and that trust means everything to me.

What I’m most proud of isn’t a specific award or accomplishment. It’s the impact this business has had on people. I’ve been able to preserve memories for families celebrating new beginnings, honoring loved ones, and navigating difficult seasons. Knowing that my photographs become treasured keepsakes and part of a family’s legacy is something I never take for granted.

What sets me apart is that I truly understand how precious these moments are. Life has taught me that things can change in an instant, and because of that, I approach every session with a lot of heart and intention. I want my clients to feel seen, comfortable, and cared for, and I want them to walk away with more than beautiful images – I want them to have memories they can hold onto for years to come.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The photography industry has changed so much over the last 20 years, and I think it will continue to evolve quickly over the next 5-10 years. Technology and AI are already changing the way photographers work, from editing tools to image creation, and I think we’ll continue to see more automation and more people using their phones and AI-generated images for everyday needs.

At the same time, I believe there will be an even greater appreciation for authentic, human connection. Anyone can take a picture, but not everyone can create an experience, make people feel comfortable, or capture genuine emotion and relationships. I think professional photographers who focus on storytelling and creating meaningful experiences will continue to thrive.

I’m also seeing a shift toward people valuing printed products and legacy pieces again. In a world where thousands of photos live on our phones and social media, professionally created images that are printed, framed, and passed down through generations become even more special.

I think the photographers who will succeed are the ones who adapt to new technology while staying true to what really matters- capturing real moments and preserving memories that can’t be recreated or replaced.
