Meet Laura Duholm of Minnesota

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Duholm.

Hi Laura, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In High school I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up. I responded, “a photographer.” My teacher said, “think of something else. You will never make that a job.” I honestly didn’t feel discouraged but I simply set that idea aside. In college, I was the friend that was always taking photos. It led to friends “modeling” for me and realizing that I really did have a passion for capturing photographs. It lit a fire in me to really pursue this. I started my business in 2012 and captured models, engagement, and wedding photos. Those couples stories led to having children which led to me transitioning into solely a family photographer. I adore capturing children’s personalities, and their contagious laughter and energy. I never want to lose my passion for photography so it is a side gig that has led to meeting many new families and making those connections. I also work as a special ed paraprofessional in an elementary school which has also helped my photo career when it comes to “reading children” and meet them right where they are. I pride myself that I can change my tone and my tune based on each child to make them feel important, comfortable, and loved.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a fairly smooth road but of course, owning your own business comes with challenges. I am a solo business owner and I really learn something new each year. People would describe me as kind, honest, dependable, and genuine. I hope that each client feels that when they meet me and when they leave their session. The biggest challenge is Minnesota weather. We have all four seasons which I LOVE but you really never know what MN weather will bring. My clients are the best though and are flexible, patient, and really calm my nerves when it comes to this!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a family photographer in the Twin Cities Southern Suburb area. I am known for being the “sticker photographer.” After every session, kiddos get to pick a sticker to make their own truck, put a face on a mermaid, or superhero, decorate a donut, etc. The kids remember every year and it always makes me smile. It’s something simple but something they look forward to.

I am most proud of just running an honest business and how much I really do care about the people, their kids, and their photos. Even if something “personal” going on in my life, I always take a few minutes before each session and remind myself, “they deserve 45 minutes – 1 hour of my time.” This means my FULL attention, FULL effort, my heart, my creativity, etc.. and then I can get back in my car and think about whatever may be a stressor BUT when I am at a session – those thoughts have to leave my mind because that’s what these families deserve. I am very proud of myself for that.

What sets me apart from others? This is more than a job to me. I don’t just take photos. I am a former caregiver of elderly residents, I work in special education and I really care. I think people feel my heart during our time together. Life gets busy, life gets stressful – I want to stop time for them to really cherish images for a lifetime.

What makes you happy?
Fall weather makes me happy. A fresh blanket of snow with giant snowflakes coming down makes me happy. The summer sunsets make me happy. The Spring floral blooms make me happy. The color yellow makes me happy. The lake makes me happy. My dog makes me happy. All of these things make me just stop and be really grateful and thankful that God has created all of these beautiful things for me to enjoy on a daily basis.
