Today we’d like to introduce you to Gavin Buckentine.
Hi Gavin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Started out writing songs with my friend, BK. He was the one who introduced me to the first audio engineer I met, who at the time, went by “Speakers”. Speakers taught me the beginning steps of music, producing, and audio engineering and showed me there was more to music than just words in rhythm recorded on a DAW. That’s when I fell in love with music. From that point on I started working so I could pay for equipment, spent many sleepless nights learning by trial and error (a lot of YouTube) and got myself to a point where I was ready to record other artists and start mixing confidently. Since then I’ve gone on to mix and produce for many MN artists and others around the country.
As of late my journey has brought me to the FairPlay Entertainment Studio out of St. Paul where I currently record artists wanting an affordable spot to create their music!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. From getting kicked out of homes, being looked down on for pursuing this career, to losing my best friend, this journey has been a difficult one to say the least but it makes me all the better for having gone through all of that
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a producer/audio engineer/musician. Known for all of the above but primarily audio engineer.
What sets me apart from other engineers is the work ethic and the structure I bring to the process. It’s always a vibe but once we working we getting something done one way or another.
Also working with me, you’re working with 10+ years of experience that contributes to your art as well, this also includes using my versatility as a producer or as an artist myself.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Be nice, be kind.
When it comes to mentors it’s just finding someone in your field of work that you can vibe with. But don’t just be apprentice, be a friend too. You don’t always get to hear the true thoughts of your co-worker right?
Networking is tricky. Social medias are great if you’re looking to reach out of state but consistency is key. Without it may as well put out flyers in your city. My personal method that’s worked best is word of mouth. “My friends brother makes music, I’ll bring him next time!” Just remind so and so to bring they buddy!
