Hi Brittany, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My whole life I have loved taking pictures because I love being able to relive moments. I love looking at a photograph from the day I became a mother, my own wedding, a family vacation and remembering exactly how I felt. I also love how it keeps my memory of those moments alive. I forget so many things with the constant hustle and bustle of life and I just feel like photos make it so much easier to remember and keep those moments treasured forever. I bought a camera January of 2023 and never looked back.
What started as a way to hold onto my own memories quickly turned into something bigger. I started photographing friends, then their friends, and I realized how much I loved being part of someone else’s most meaningful day. Weddings especially. There is nothing like standing next to a couple as they experience one of the biggest days of their lives and knowing I get to help them remember it exactly how it felt.
Over the past four years I have built Brittany Kathleen Creative Co. around one simple belief. Your wedding photos should not come at the cost of your wedding experience. So many couples worry they will have to choose between being fully present on their day or getting the photos they have always dreamed of. I do not think they should have to choose. My whole approach, from the planning we do together beforehand to how I guide couples on the day itself, is built to protect their experience so the photographs can happen naturally around them.
That belief is where my tagline comes from. Live Your Day. Love Your Photos. It is simple, but it guides every decision I make in my business.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a very bumpy ride. My life looks extremely different today than it did in 2023. I went full time into this business last fall but to get there I hustled my butt off. I started off working for free and 2nd shooting to work with other photographers, working for experience instead of pay. I worked a 9 to 5 and then spent my weekends obsessing over this new passion. It took a lot of hard work and I still am working my butt off to hustle to grow this business to be as big as the dreams I have for it.
There were plenty of nights I edited photos until 1am after already working a full day, then getting up and doing it all again. I said yes to almost anything in the beginning just to build my portfolio and prove to myself I could actually do this. Second shooting taught me more than I expected, not just about camera settings but about how to lead a wedding day with confidence, since I was watching other photographers do it before I ever had to do it myself.
Leaving my 9 to 5 was not an easy decision either. I had to trust that the hustle I put in on nights and weekends could actually become something sustainable, and that is a scary leap to make. But every late night and every free shoot built the foundation I needed. I do not think there is a shortcut to any of this. You just have to keep showing up, even when it is exhausting, until the business finally catches up to the vision you have had for it the whole time.
I am not going to pretend I have arrived. I am still building, still hustling, and still working toward the version of this business I see in my head. But looking back at where I started with just a camera in January of 2023, I am proud of every hard step that got me here.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a wedding photographer based in Central Minnesota, and I photograph weddings across Minnesota and into the Fargo, North Dakota area. My specialty is helping couples actually experience their wedding day instead of just performing for the camera.
My whole approach is built around one belief. The best wedding photographs come from couples who are free to experience one of the most meaningful days of their lives. That shapes everything I do. Before the wedding, I build custom timelines, shot lists, and coordinate with vendors so nothing is left to chance. On the day itself, I lead with a calm, guided presence so my couples can stay present with each other and their families instead of worrying about logistics.
Every wedding package includes an engagement session. That is not an add on for me, it is non negotiable. Getting to work with my couples before the wedding builds trust, and it shows on the wedding day. Couples who have already spent time in front of my camera are more relaxed and more themselves, and that makes a real difference in their gallery.
I am also known for my editing style. I do not use heavy presets or trendy filters. I edit true to life, with longevity in mind, because I want these photographs to still feel right when my couples are showing them to their grandchildren one day. Timeless over trendy is something I take seriously.
What I am most proud of is the trust my couples place in me. Weddings are one of the most personal days of someone’s life, and being invited into that, being the person a couple trusts to guide them through it, is not something I take lightly. I am also proud of how far this business has come in four years, from working for free as a second shooter to being published in MN Wed Magazine, Minnesota Brides and now booking into 2027 and 2028.
What sets me apart is that I do not just show up on the wedding day. I prepare my couples ahead of time so they are set up to actually live their day, not just get through it. Your wedding photos should not come at the cost of your wedding experience, and I built my entire business to make sure that never happens to my couples.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I would say it doesn’t matter where you came from, how many followers you have, or any starting circumstances. If you want it bad enough you will put the work in to make it happen.
I did not start this business with a following or a name people recognized. I started with a camera I bought in January of 2023, a willingness to work for free just to get experience, and I was doing it all as a single mom. There was no shortcut and no one handed me anything. I second shot for other photographers, worked a full time job during the week, and spent my weekends and my time after my kids went to bed learning everything I could.
What I have learned is that the couples who are meant to find you will find you, and the followers or the fancy start do not matter nearly as much as showing up and doing the work day after day. Growth happens slowly, then all at once, but only if you keep putting in the effort during the slow part too. Being a single mom meant I did not have extra time to spare, so I had to be intentional with every hour I did have.
If I had waited until I felt ready, or waited until I had a big following, or waited until life felt less chaotic, I would still be waiting. Instead I just started, and I let the experience and the relationships build the business one wedding at a time. That is the lesson I would want any couple or any new photographer to hear. Where you start does not determine where you end up. How badly you want it does.
