Today we’d like to introduce you to Mourning Blooms.
Hi Mourning, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in a pretty musical matriarchal household but it was never something that really stuck out to me. My grandmother and and auntie are both very talented singers and it was always a treat to watch them sing and I was forced to sing in the choir so it always felt more like a chore than something I was passionate about until third grade when I attempted to make some friends by creating my first rap which was Christmas themed. This kick-started my journey into writing music which branched off into me, learning the guitar and several other instruments. Today pride myself in not just writing my music but also producing and recording it in my humble little room. I’ve lived many places but I’d argue. My real identity started in Minneapolis with the creation of my first album under the name Mourning Blooms “This Was A Mistake.”
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I hate to say that I am a perfectionist but I am probably a perfectionist. For the longest time I really felt that a lot of my music simply wasn’t worthy to be released and that I wasn’t good enough in a lot of areas. After a pretty successful underground music career in Chicago, it really felt like everything that I was creating. It became uninspiring which eventually just led to and outright hiatus of me writing music that didn’t just feel like like writers block felt like I was punishing myself or not being at the level that I wanted to be. And ironically enough what really helped me reconnect with my passion to music was embracing nature. Those slow paced hikes and especially bird watching helped me find patience with myself that I had never allowed myself to have and embrace imperfections. And most of all, understand that some of those imperfections are some of the things that were making people gravitate towards me to begin with.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, producer activist and professional wildlife photographer. Every aspect of who I am has played a significant role in everything I do and I am most proud of finding a way to continue to share my art with the world. I’m trying to be the best version of myself, but I also want to approach music in a way that is accessible to all people from the grandpa who only listens to bluegrass, to the non-binary kid that never felt like they fit in, to young woman in college who just experience the worst breakup of their life.
How do you think about luck?
I think that sometimes us artists find ourselves in positions that are really awesome. Whether it be getting a bunch of views on a post you boosted to performing one of the greatest solos of your musical career. But sometimes those High moments can put us in positions. Where when things do go bad or we get a string of bad luck at dulls those high moments. I’ve definitely had plenty of highs followed up with an Even longer string of lows, but through all of that I’ve kept in the back of my mind that I have to keep going because the universe is so quite confusing and tricky, so eventually they’ll the good luck comes our way.
