Today we’d like to introduce you to YG SOLO.
Hi YG , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey as an artist began about two years ago, when I followed a friend to a studio session after leaving college. I went simply to support my friend, but that experience ended up sparking a passion and love for making music. Eventually, I decided to hop in the studio myself. After my second song, I created something I was genuinely proud of, and from that moment on, I haven’t stopped making music.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been far from a smooth road. I’ve had to deal with a lot of challenges early on in my career, including betrayal, financial struggles, envy, and ego. The music industry can also put you in situations where you have to learn how to navigate difficult personalities, especially when business is involved. I’ve had to learn how to separate personal feelings from business, communicate professionally, and understand how to work with different types of people. Very quickly, I realized that what started as a hobby was becoming a career, and I had to grow with it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a songwriter, recording/performing artist who makes Afrobeat music, deeply influenced by my Ghanaian roots. I’m known for my electrifying live performances and the energy I bring to every stage. I believe my energy is truly one of a kind.
Being from Kumasi plays a major role in my music. I incorporate Ghanaian slang and Pidgin into my songs, allowing me to stay connected to where I come from while also introducing those elements to audiences from different backgrounds. I’m proud of the stages I’ve performed on and the artists I’ve had the opportunity to open for, including Kidi, a Ghanaian artist.
What I believe sets me apart most is my ability to blend different cultures, sounds, and generations. My goal is to create a bridge between my Ghanaian roots and the world through my music, while bringing people together through a shared experience and energy.
What were you like growing up?
I was always the kid who got in trouble for talking, not being where I was supposed to be, or simply being too energetic. My teachers would always tell me that I was smart, but I just didn’t know how to sit still. They would joke that if I put the same energy into school that I put into entertaining people, I’d be a straight-A student.
Growing up, my biggest dream was to become a professional soccer player and represent Ghana on the national team. I was absolutely obsessed with that dream, and honestly, a part of me still is. Soccer was a huge part of who I was growing up, and I think that same passion, energy, and competitiveness eventually found its way into my music.
