Community Highlights: Meet Ryan Burns of Spectrum Entertainment

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Burns.

Ryan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey into the wedding industry began when I was just 14 years old. I started by carrying records for Roger Maunders, owner of The Twin Cities Scene, which at the time was the largest DJ company in the Twin Cities. Working alongside Roger gave me a front-row seat to the entertainment industry and taught me early on that being a great DJ was about much more than playing music. It was about reading a room, connecting with people, creating memorable moments, and making every celebration feel special.

In 2000, I moved to Northern Minnesota, and by 2001, I had founded Spectrum Entertainment. What began as a small business built around my love of music and entertaining grew steadily through hard work, word of mouth, and a commitment to giving every couple a celebration that truly reflected who they were.

A major turning point came in 2014. With the help of one of my best friends and colleagues, Tim from Minnesota Wedding Party, I elevated Spectrum Entertainment into a high-end luxury wedding-hosting company. That transition changed the way I viewed my role. I was no longer simply the person playing the music. I became the host of the entire celebration—helping couples plan the flow of their day, coordinating with other professionals, guiding guests through each important moment, and creating a seamless experience from the ceremony through the final dance.

Then came 2020, a year that changed my life both professionally and personally. Like so many people in the wedding industry, I watched a full calendar of events disappear almost overnight because of COVID. That was also the year my sweetheart, Katie, had to move away from Minnesota to Naples, Florida.

Rather than sitting at home and waiting for events to return, my son and I transformed my pickup truck into a traveling DJ booth. We covered the truck with sound equipment and traveled from town to town, playing music and MCing as we drove through the streets. Families came outside to dance in their driveways, wave, laugh, and enjoy a few moments of happiness during an incredibly difficult time. Seeing people smiling, dancing, and having fun was all the reward we needed.

We also hosted an online party to raise money for the employees of the Walker American Legion, whose livelihoods had been affected by the shutdowns. With the support of the community, we raised more than $7,500. Our traveling parties attracted enough attention that the story was eventually featured on the news. That experience reminded me just how powerful music can be and how it can bring people together even during times when we are forced to remain apart.

Although Katie and I were living in different states, we knew our future was together. In 2022, I expanded Spectrum Entertainment by opening a second branch in Southwest Florida. That allowed me to continue serving couples in Northern Minnesota while also building relationships and growing the company throughout Naples and the surrounding Southwest Florida region.

Katie is also an accomplished, high-profile photographer and the owner of ADOR Photography. She photographs corporate work, weddings, and boudoir sessions, and operates her own studio in Hackensack, Minnesota. Although we each have our own businesses and creative styles, we have the opportunity to work several weddings together every year. Being able to share those experiences with my wife and combine our talents for couples is something that means a great deal to both of us.

Throughout my career, I have DJed in more than 32 states across the United States. Traveling to different parts of the country has introduced me to many wedding traditions, cultures, musical styles, and ways of celebrating. Every experience has broadened my perspective and helped me become a more versatile and thoughtful wedding host.

Today, I still approach every celebration with the same excitement I felt as a 14-year-old carrying crates of records. My goal has never been to simply play music. It is to create an experience where couples can relax, remain fully present, and enjoy one of the most important days of their lives.

There is no greater reward than seeing a room filled with genuine smiles, watching people come together on the dance floor, and knowing I helped create memories that will last a lifetime.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Never a smooth road. 30+ years of mistakes made and corrected is why i am where I am. I continue to learn with every event .

Finances, I have committed myself to using newer, updated, and contemporary gear. Attending out of town conferences and continuing education events. These expenses and many more have have lead to difficult decisions on living comfortably or investing in our clients.

I have not had a New Years off since I was 14. That was 36 years ago. I have not had a weekend off in longer than I can remember. Family, friends, and kiddos have had to adjust to my sacrifice. When 80% of the population works Monday thru Friday and you always work Thursday Through Sunday it can be hard to nurture relationships

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
If there’s one thing I’d want readers to know, it’s that we were never trying to become the biggest company. We simply wanted to become the company that people remembered long after their wedding was over.

At Spectrum Entertainment, we specialize in full-service wedding hosting. Yes, we’re DJs, but that’s only a small part of what we do. We help couples build their timeline, coordinate with vendors, keep the day flowing naturally, calm nerves when things don’t go exactly as planned, and make sure everyone—from the grandparents to the flower girl—feels included in the celebration.

One thing I’m incredibly proud of is that we’ve never believed in a “one-size-fits-all” wedding. Every couple has their own story, personalities, traditions, and vision. Our job is to bring that vision to life, not to put our own stamp on it. When guests leave saying, “That wedding was so them,” we’ve done our job.

We’ve also chosen to keep our pricing simple. While many companies build packages with endless add-ons, we’ve always believed couples deserve to know exactly what they’re getting. That’s why we offer one price for the entire day—from the ceremony through the last dance. We don’t nickel-and-dime couples or surprise them with upgrades they didn’t know they needed. We’d rather spend our time creating an unforgettable experience than selling extras.

I also believe there are two very different kinds of DJs. Some play music. We host weddings. The music is incredibly important, but so is the timing, the energy in the room, the transitions, the communication with vendors, and knowing exactly when to step in—and when to step back. When all of those pieces come together, the couple gets to do something priceless: they get to be guests at their own wedding.

I’m especially proud of the relationships we’ve built over the years. Many of our couples become lifelong friends. We’ve been invited back to DJ siblings’ weddings, anniversaries, family celebrations, and even weddings for guests who first met us years earlier on someone else’s dance floor. There is no greater compliment than earning that kind of trust.

More than anything, I want readers to know that this has never been just a business for me. Every wedding represents months—or even years—of dreaming and planning for a couple. Being trusted with one of the most important days of their lives is something I’ll never take for granted.

Years from now, most couples won’t remember every song that was played. They’ll remember how they felt. They’ll remember the laughter, the happy tears, the hugs, the full dance floor, and the feeling that everything came together exactly as they had hoped. Knowing we were trusted to be part of those memories is why, after all these years, I still genuinely love what I do.

How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy? That’s an easy one.

My wife, Katie, and my kids. Nothing else even comes close. Watching my kids grow into incredible young adults and seeing them both succeed in college has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. There isn’t a job, award, or accomplishment that means more to me than my family.

Every Christmas, I look forward to opening cards from couples whose weddings I’ve had the privilege of being part of. Some include family photos. Some include kids who weren’t even born when I met them. Those cards remind me why I love what I do.

One of the coolest things that’s happened in my career is being invited back by the same families over and over again. I’ve had the honor of DJing a couple’s wedding, then years later their daughter’s wedding, and then years after that their grandson’s wedding. That’s something I’ll never take for granted.

Those relationships are also the reason I’ve had the opportunity to DJ in more than 32 states. Most of the weddings I’ve been part of have been destination weddings, and guests often come from all over the country. Over the years, those guests became couples, then they referred their friends, brothers, sisters, coworkers, and eventually their own children. It’s amazing how one wedding can turn into dozens of friendships and celebrations across the country.

Outside of weddings, I’m pretty easy to please. Give me a 78-degree sunny day, a steady breeze, my family around me, and an NFL football game, and I’m a happy guy.

At the end of the day, I’m just grateful. Grateful for my family. Grateful for the couples who’ve trusted me with some of the biggest days of their lives. And grateful that after all these years, I still wake up excited to do what I love.
