Meet Danielle Nicole Williams of STIGMA Consulting Group, LLC.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Nicole Williams.

Hi Danielle Nicole, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When you hear the phrase “student with disability,” what do you envision? A monster? A deformity? Do you ask yourself what is wrong, or do you feel pity?

I felt every one of these emotions and more. I did not want my sons, either one of them, to be different. I still to this day look at society and want them to FIT IN. Why? Everything in this world is visual. It is what you look like—your image and brand is everything.

But the truth is, when I was younger, I did not fit in at all. I went from Montessori school in my early years to going to public school in 3rd grade. I also had a speech impediment and was in therapy to correct it. I was teased horribly and unmercifully to the point where I wanted to move away from New York (a place which reminded me of my torment), be homeschooled, or just disappear. I was always considered the outsider looking in. So, as a parent, I wanted to shield my sons from what society did to me. Yeah, I made it, but I was afraid no one would understand my sons. I was concerned Allen and Aaron would not fit in, especially Allen because he was autistic.

I am founded and CEO of S.T.I.G.M.A Consulting Group, LLC. I named my company S.T.I.G.M.A. (Student Timely IEP Growth Modification Advocates) because of the stigma children and adults with disabilities face every day, which she wants to dispel. I am a revered educator, administrator and community partner who has dedicated her life to serving individuals with special needs including herself.

My passion for true inclusivity for all individuals with disabilities helped her to coin the slogan “potential, power, possibilities.” I believe that everyone who encounters a person with a disability has the potential to help them thrive, the power to support his or her transformation and create endless possibilities for the person to achieve academic, social and emotional success.

I am responsible for changing the face of special education in the Valley Stream Central High School District. As the creator and founder of the Twilight Alternative high School which is one of its most vital alternative programs for special needs students, that she single-handedly built. Through careful research and intensive conversations with fellow educators, she designed and wrote the curriculum, managed staffing, and launched the program once it was ready for implementation. Perhaps the most important part of her work, however, was establishing and developing key relationships with teachers, students, families, and other district stakeholders, based on a foundation of mutual trust and respect.

I use my law degree to advocate for parents, children and adults with disabilities ensuring they receive all rights designated to them under the IDEA and ADA. As a special educator for over 20 years, I have served as a principal, assistant principal, teacher, instructional coach, Executive Director and District Director. She was a 2020 Early Childhood Leadership Fellow with the Division for Early Childhood of the Council for Exceptional Children.

Outside of my work with S.T.I.G.M.A, I served as Chairperson for the New York State Education Department Commissioner’s Advisory Panel for Special Education Services. In this capacity, I served on the executive committee, advising on policies related to the coordination of services for children with disabilities. I served as the Eastern Region Leadership and Development Chair for Jack and Jill of America, Inc, and is the Chairman of the Heritage Committee of Middlesex County, Virginia where she created a historic trail to highlight the African American influence in that rural county. I also serve as a board member of the Middle Peninsula African Genealogical and History Society (MPAAGHS), WFUV 90.7 Community Advisory Board public radio addressing community issues in the Bronx, NY, and Growing Up Green Charter School.

A nationally renowned trainer, I have presented at the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development National Conference, the Division for Early Childhood’s Council for Exceptional Children International Conference, the New York State Association for Independent Schools, the Division for Early Childhood Education for the Council of Exceptional Children and the City University of New York.

Above all, I am a catalyst that unlocks hidden talents, propels potential and elevates others to create spaces where our unique differences are celebrated. I am a devoted wife and mother of two teenage sons with disabilities who fuel my mission to guarantee students and adults with disabilities are always treated with reverence and respect.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a parent of a child with a disability, you may feel shame and embarrassment. I know I did. I did not want to be seen, I did not want to take my son out to play, I just wanted to stay in my cave of despair. You, as a parent, do not know what you did “wrong.” You just want your child to be “normal” and be like the other kids. You feel your child and your situation may inconvenience other people, educators, society, and the world. The shame and the stigma overwhelm you as it did me to the point I could not breathe. I could not see any hope or any joy. But the truth is your child does not see himself that way. Your child is just being himself, laughing, loving, and learning the best way he can.

I realized then and still believe that the problem with the education system is always adults, never children. Kids are kids. They laugh with you, challenge you, and make mistakes constantly. But they are still just kids. When my son participates in his classroom, he is inspired and driven to learn. He knows he may learn differently, but he does not hold back. He has no limitations. He is an open book of adventure in his school. He is a leader with goals and dreams for his life like every other child regardless of any disability or diagnosis.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

To my parents, my mother – Justice Patricia P. Satterfield, who always believed I could do this, and my father – Preston Taylor Satterfield, whose quiet support was always there, never too far behind.

To Guidance Counselor Grace Wiggins, who saved my life and continues to inspire me to this day.

To the teachers who shaped my journey:
Tracey Mancino, where it all began, and the best teaching team ever: Christina Burgess (English), Carlos Castillo (Math), Robert Gibbons (Science), and my incredible co-presenter, Laurie Barnes-Holden (who defined what true collaboration really means in education)

To my students, who taught me more than I ever taught them:
Ingrid Nandez, the first student I helped move out of Special Education; Billy Gillett, the first student I taught to read; GianCarlo Mainardi, the first student with Autism to graduate as Valedictorian of Francis Lewis High School.

To my mentor in the NYCDOE central Office, Susan Coleman, a true matriarch and mentor in the NYCDOE.

To the parents of children with disabilities: we are enough. Your love, patience, and dedication matter more than you know.

To all educators of children with disabilities: I see you, I value you, and I thank you for your tireless work—you truly deserve more recognition (and pay!).
