Rising Stars: Meet Murata Wolldeyohannes of Minnesota

Today we’d like to introduce you to Murata Wolldeyohannes.

Hi Murata, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised between Northeast Minneapolis and St. Paul, and growing up in Minnesota has deeply shaped the way I see people, culture, and everyday life. I started photography as a way to document the world around me, and over time it grew into a passion for storytelling through portraits, fashion, street photography, and film.

My work has also allowed me to explore my Oromo heritage and the importance of culture and identity. Today, I’m a photographer, filmmaker, and aspiring film director based in St. Paul. As I continue growing in my career as an artist, I hope to carry my passion for visual storytelling into film and create work that feels authentic , cinematic, and meaningful.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve faced many obstacles along the way, but two of the biggest have been shifting my perspective and developing a keen eye for detail. I’ve also had to learn how to find the time and balance to let my creative imagination take its course. Those challenges have pushed me to slow down, see things differently, and trust my creative process. Ultimately, overcoming them has helped me grow not only as a photographer, but as an artist.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a photographer and filmmaker specializing in portrait, fashion, street, and cultural photography. My work focuses on capturing real moments and turning everyday scenes into visual stories with a cinematic like vibe

I’m most proud of how photography has allowed me to explore culture, identity, and the people and places that have shaped me. What sets me apart is my attention to detail and the way I approach photography with a filmmaker’s perspective. I’m always thinking about the story behind an image , not just what’s in the frame, but how it makes you feel on deep level.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding a mentor can be incredibly valuable, but I believe some of the best teachers can also be our failures, accomplishments, and everything in between. Failure shows us what needs to be corrected, while accomplishments show us what’s possible and push us to experiment and grow.

Mentors can show us the ropes, but there are teachers everywhere, from the people we meet and the work we create to the mistakes we make along the way. My advice is to stay curious, build genuine relationships, and be open to learning from every experience.
