Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Antenucci.
Hi Nancy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My first sense that I could “step outside” myself came during grade school recess. I was pretending to be a galloping white horse to stay warm. I could almost feel the mane and the steam of my own breath. I still describe myself that way: a white horse from the Appalachians.
My mother and I were both in cahoots of the mysteries. She gave me my first tarot deck when I was 10 with one condition. If the cards worked, she would take them back. During our school’s show and tell, I read for a pregnant teacher and told her the baby would have one small thing wrong. The child was born with a malformed ear. After I told my mom, she took the deck. I didn’t pick tarot up again till my early twenties.
Dance became my religion. I gave myself to it fully and waitressed to survive while dancing and teaching with a company in Central Pennsylvania. A fellow waiter, Jeff, read tarot for me one night. When I saw the Magician card, something woke up in me and never went back to sleep. At that point when I wondered whether I was truly going mad, that card told me I was not. Later, Jeff gave me a Morgan Greer. It didn’t come with the regular little book of definitions. I didn’t realize that the cards had definitions. The imagery spoke to me so loudly. I studied one card a night by meditating on the image and learned the language from the inside.
The cards told me my true teacher would be in Minneapolis. When I arrived, the traditional instruction did not suit me, so I taught myself an intuitive approach and began guiding others through it. Within a few years I had become the teacher that reading described.
Since then the work has widened into conferences, collaborations, theater and dance built on the cards. I have authored two books and taught in China, Canada, Omega Institute and more. I do not want to imitate tarot. I want to be it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Tarot is the only aspect in my life that I have not manhandled or push. It started as a creek and has grown into an ocean as I learned to allow it to grow within myself.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I read tarot, mentor readers, teach all over the place, and design ritual.
What I really teach is creative authority. Not definitions. Your own eyes, your own read. I have written two guide books- Psychic Tarot, which is basically thirty years of teaching people to find their own tarot language, and Tarot Rituals, close to a hundred ceremonies you can do alone or with a group.
I am probably best known for getting tarot off the table. I spent the first half of my life as a concert dancer and choreographer, so when I lead a gathering or even just a single student, there is usually creative explorations, embodiment and playing hard.
I founded the Twin Cities Tarot Collective, which runs the North Star Tarot Hermitage every Fall, a big day of divination Saturday called the Human Be-In every February, and monthly workshops including my immersive Tarot Sandbox.
The thing I am proudest of assisting folks in trusting their own Creative Authority. I love creating Tarot magicians especially! I act as your muse until you can hear your own.
I listen deeply, swear a bit and have a wicked sense of humor.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
AI will change the entire landscape in terms of the kind of books written and how the cards will be used. I sense an important trend in small groups meeting for a personal connection thru Tarot, divination, intuition and creative spirituality. Community will become essential.
