Today we’d like to introduce you to Midnight Water Fairy.
Hi Midnight, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story starts in a small region in Kazakhstan called Dzhambul on the magical river called Talas. My family and I immigrated to MN when I was 3 or 4, but funny how parts of that land still lives in my memory. Which is relevant because, due to my birth being so close to my sister and lack of nutrition, I had a medical condition where my white blood cells started attacking my bones so had a hard time walking around without pains in my legs. Luckily with antibiotics I recovered swiftly.
Due to my poor health, my dad thought I was extremely frail looking, he started putting through different sports (against doctors orders hehe) but I watched a lot of Xena and was excited when I got to be in gymnastics around the 5th grade. I loved of all the tumbling and cool skills ! Eventually In high school. I was introduced to our performing arts program where my dance teacher,Mrs . Jill, allowed to join in the second semesters even though I had to leave early for gymnastics.
One day I ended up getting an injury were I had nerve damage in my right arm and vertigo, so I stepped out of gymnastics but stayed in dance till I graduated high school.
I ended up leaving home at 18 and continuing my education in dance mostly In modern, lyrical , and basic ballet. Seeing Pinks performance of glitter in the air ✨ I remembered the aerial tissue that from a young age I was always obsessed with. It reignited my love for circus, particularly and anime called Kaleido Star. So then my mom got me my first silks that I ended up hanging from a tree and began trained.
At this time I was working as a massage therapist and my lovely client suggested “omg you can’t be training alone in trees u could die! here is a studio where you can train! “ which I agreed with and led me to performing at local renaissance festival. I thought that was super fun but after I was introduced to my first drag show I applied to be a cast member of the Queer circus. Here I took my online karaoke gothic YouTube persona Midnightwaterfairy to the circus and continued growing my circus art from contortion, fire arts, mermaiding, singing, burlesque and so much more!
I been working with Queer circus a little over 8 years now which gave me a great opportunity to meet incredible talented and kind people in my community and all over the country!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s definitely been not a smooth road, but as most professional circus athletes would say, my biggest struggle is learning the limits of the body and pushing its boundaries to its extremes. I have popped and fractured many a rib, dislocated my shoulders, broken some toes but, I’m also a healer and that’s helped me learn how quick muscles and bones recover, and how to help others with pain and recovery.
I also hold responsibility for my family and first generation parents, them not having roots on this corner of the planet and making sure they are okay and stable as much as possible can get tough. They still struggle acclimating to new rules and cultural shock but they continue living and slowly growing and so do I.
Additionally, being non-binary, non-Christian in a binary, Christian world has its challenges. But in the circus/sideshow I feel more comfortable and accepted than most anywhere else.

I am proud of all the work I do but I think I am most known for massage and contortion. I been working massage and body work for over 15years where I helped a lot people get in touch with their bodies. Contortion though has been one of my biggest passions it’s incredible the states of mind you reach connecting to your own nervous system and how it reflects with the world, spirits, and energies around you. It’s almost like a primal energy we as humans lost touch of because the system around us want to be constricted when in reality we are so free and fluid.
How do you think about happiness?
Nature makes me happy! It’s incredible growing changing adapting to create space for everything surrounding it….There is nothing like putting on a mermaid tail and swimming with aquatic creatures and see their reactions or being bendy in the forest and slowly seeing their animals come closer to you and be like what is this thing … looks like human …. Doesn’t move like a human haha … and just to freak them out I make little bird noises and then they really don’t know what to think haha
