Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcy Dworschak.
Hi Marcy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started crocheting when I was 8-9 years old. My mom decided that it would be best if her mom taught me how to crochet. I was named after my grandmother and we got along amazingly. I learned a lot through the next few years and decided it was time to enter something at my local fair. I made an amazing blanket for my parents and at the age of 13 won grand champion at the fair! From that moment I was “hooked”! I do still have the blanket to this day. Almost everyone in my family has requested a version of this blanket. The thing I love the most about crocheting is the creativity it allows me. When I first started, I made a lot of blankets as baby gifts. It wasn’t until I was in my 40’s that I realized that I could sign up for crafting/vendor events to sell my crocheted items. I have definitely evolved with my product line as I’ve now been doing shows for 10+ years. I started with scarves, blankets, potholders and dish cloths. Now I’m doing more things like pillows, towel hangers and my animals. <3
So along with this I’ve started my own baking business Muggs’ Hometown Bakery. Growing up I have the fondest memories of being in the kitchen, baking with my mom. I grew up on a dairy farm and there were 6 in our family so there was always food being cooked and treats being baked. My dad had a sweet tooth and my mom always made sure that there was something sweet for him to have. I remember the look on his face when biting into something sweet. I’ve always loved the way people react when receiving a crocheted gift or a sweet treat. It brings me joy to make others happy!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh for sure there’s been struggles. Not knowing if what you made is going to sell or not? Trying to make sure you are on trend with certain items. Do I have the right color schemes this year? Do I have enough product? From show to show just taking notes of what’s sold, what didn’t and things to strive for next time. But always TIME! Never enough of it to do all the things…lol
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
For my crocheted items (at least right now) I would say it’s my animals. <3 I really love seeing them come to life with all the little details.
With my baked goods, I’m having a blast learning how to bake different recipes and going through my mom’s recipe box, seeing her handwriting on the recipe cards and having all the fun memories come flooding back. I received it after my parents passed, which is one of my most treasured items.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I do networking through other people with my same interests. So, when attending shows, talking with other vendors with similar interests, and finding out what works best for them and any shows that might be coming up. Stuff like that.
