Hidden Gems: Meet Aliza Thompson of About Face Skincare Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aliza Thompson.

Hi Aliza, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been an esthetician for 23 years and a Reiki Master/Teacher for 7 yeas. Over the span of my career I have worked in a resort, day spa and salons and med spas. I have come to realize that in an industry that is very polarized by holistic treatments vs. medical that they seem to work best done together. In 2020, I decided to go out on my own and open About Face Skincare Studio in Minneapolis. My treatments are integrative combining more medical based treatments like peels and microneedling with Reiki and facial massage.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There always seems to be challenges, but without them I believe there wouldn’t be growth speaking both professionally and personally. Nothing has pointed out areas that either needed to be healed or “opportunities for growth” more than running a business especially in a service industry like mine. It’s a very client facing industry which can make setting prices and upholding boundaries with your time a challenge. This was especially tough during the pandemic when people were struggling. I remember starting out and wondering how many people would even feel safe enough to be touched and come in for a facial. Turns out self care was exactly what was needed during that time!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My business is known for integrative skincare. This and the fact that I’m very educational forward in my approach is what sets me apart. I don’t want people to come in and leave with JUST a service experience. I want them leaving informed about their skin specifically so that they can extend the care that they received in that treatment at home confidently. I believe that at the end of the day my job is to help someone put their best self out into the world. When someone feels good about themselves and are confident they interact with world in a more positive manner.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think the biggest risk I’ve taken has been opening when I did in 2020.
