Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Slavik. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Nick Slavik is the Proprietor of the Nick Slavik Painting & Restoration Co. and is the Host of Ask a Painter Live. Ask a Painter Live has aired weekly for more than 5 years, instructing, answering questions, and championing the trades as an avenue for freedom. His company employs +30 people, a leadership team, and operates a full-scale Finishing Shop and Training Facility. He has been a national and international speaker on topics such as entrepreneurship, craftspersonship, trades reformation, recruiting, working with Millennials, harnessing technology for trades business, financial benchmarks, industry standards, and coating science.
After High School, he joined the Army as a mechanic and a paratrooper. Shortly after the events of September 11th, 2001, Nick volunteered for two tours of duty overseas: the first in Afghanistan & the second in Iraq.
After his service he attended college, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in business management and with a double minor of tax accounting and managerial accounting.
Nick and his wife Tootse have four children. They recently sold their fully restored 1917 Craftsman home and built an innovative, energy-efficient home on their farm – using the new home as a proving ground for the simplest, most innovative finishing procedures.
Nick has traveled the US hosting Master Classes for business owners and Craftspeople. He has created one of the most in-depth educational pieces in the areas of estimating, production management, hiring, budgeting, marketing, financial systems, processes, SOP’s and leadership. He has also compiled a wealth of knowledge about coating science – which he uses to create fail-proof, simple finishing systems for his own business as well as others across the country.
Nick has been a craftsman for more than 25 years. His company has been awarded more than 10 National awards for craftsmanship over the last 4 years, including massive restorations of Victorian mansions. He has created a rigorous Apprenticeship program where he finds, trains, inspires, and mentors’ young people in his craft. He is also a family member at This Old House, where he contributes content about his craft.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Struggles are always with humans. Teaching myself to be an effective leader has been my biggest challenge, along with overcoming limiting beliefs.
We’ve been impressed with Nick Slavik Painting & Restoration Co., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
In our industry, we’re known as Residential RePainters. We specialize in painting the inside and outside of home that people live in currently. We really work well around family, kids, pets, work-from-home, and learn-from-home arrangements. We also specialize in resorting historic homes. We offer our clients things that most contractors do not: help w color, furniture moving, cleaning, and high-velocity communication. I’m most proud of our Apprenticeship Program. It’s an industry-leading training program where we take people who have never considered the trades and make them world-class Craftspeople in a very short time.
What matters most to you? Why?
Trust matters most to me. The trust of my clients, my Apprentices, my Craftspeople, and my Leadership Team. It’s our first Core Value for a reason – TRUST.
