Meet JoJo Spencer of Jojo’s Photos & Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to JoJo Spencer.

Hi JoJo, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my photography journey by purchasing a DSLR camera from one of my friends, just a simple entry-level camera. I had no intentions of doing it for a job. I just wanted to take pictures because it was fun. I started to receive good feedback from people, but I wasn’t sure if they were just being good friends and lying to me by saying the photos looked good, or if they really looked good. All I knew for certain was the photos looked good to me. So I decided to throw myself into the photography industry to see if there was any interest. Since the first day of booking a client, we have had a tremendous amount of momentum that we continue to build off of.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Surprisingly, it has been more smooth than not. There have been a few moments where stress levels were high, but in general, it’s been good. Having a solid team around me to help take care of a major portion of the workload has been a game-changer for the business. If there is a bumpy road, we put our minds together to smooth it out so we can keep the momentum going.

As you know, we’re big fans of Jojo’s Photos & Studio. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are an independent photography studio located in small-town Minnesota that primarily focuses on portrait photography. We have built a team of 7 within the studio that involves paid staff and assistances. For most independent photographers, it’s the photographer’s job to do everything; booking shoots, responding to inquiries, finances, shooting, editing, etc… We have built it to be at a place where my only job is to shoot, edit, and network. Everything else gets taken care of by the team around me. It creates time for me to vision cast, team build, and focus on all of the areas that are my strengths.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
In 2020, we finished the year off with 420 photoshoots. The goal is always to surpass the previous year, as we continue to grow. I’ve learned that photography is the easiest part of the gig, but will only get your business so far. To go beyond the cap, you have to think less about being a photographer and start thinking more about how to run a business and how to build off of the momentum you’ve got. Marketing, branding, networking, and innovation are the keys to not getting drowned out in a sea of competitors.
