Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Quinn.
Hi Kelly, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have been playing music since I was 10. Various instruments like drums, saxophone and guitar. After high school, I got into bands playing bass around the Chicagoland area. I’ve been in Taking Back Emo since 2019 traveling the Midwest nearly every weekend bringing EMO hits to area concert venues
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely has been a learning experience! In Taking Back Emo we have had numerous lineup changes along with navigating a pandemic! There are always some things that come up on the road. Hotels not ready. Loading into venues at a frantic pace because of traffic jams. We were stranded in Indianapolis because we blew a tire on our trailer on the way back from a show in Bloomington Indiana. We tried to tow it and change the tire in a downpour! We had our friends drive 2 hours to pick us up so we weren’t stranded for the night out there. Took about two weeks to get the trailer back.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Bassist for Taking Back Emo. We are a national touring band that specializes in bringing 2000’s era EMO music to music venues around the country. Our event is called MYSPACE EMO PROM. Remember 2009? The time of Myspace, HotTopic and the battle of Emo vs. Scene kids. We throw a reunion party at each venue bringing the audience back to the era of bleeding hearts, sensitivity, and introverted teenage angst.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I read a lot. From self help books to fiction. Depends on the mood. I’m also into working out so I follow a lot of YOUTUBE for workout ideas or different methods to different body parts. As for music, I watch as many concerts as I can. I try to network in the industry as much as possible. The industry constantly changes so you need to be tuned in to that world to stay on top of the game.
