Edit Values Daily Inspiration: Meet Laura Hart

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Hart.

Hi Laura, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My company’s story is like many other entrepreneurs. It started with a dream to work for myself while doing the thing I have the strongest passion for, Special Fx.

I knew I wanted to create something meaningful for myself and my community.

This was the driving force that created the current business I am in now.

My first company was created in 2012, called Hart Makeup.

It’s a business that I run and own myself, doing freelance makeup for Film, TV and Commercials.

I have been doing professional makeup since 2012 and have loved the experience of working with amazing crews creating amazing content.

My new business adventure is called FDFX Labs LLC.

I am a co-owner of the business and run it with three other Union makeup artists, April Hinrichs, Miki Sautbine and Darla Eden.

What makes Fdfx labs special is that it is fully owned and operated by women. One in which we fully empower other women who often don’t work in our dept.

It was formed during the height of the pandemic in 2019, with the need to create something for ourselves as Makeup Artists, on set to fill the bridge between a beauty makeup artist and a special effect makeup artist.

It’s a working environment with the main goal to support and raise each other up while creating beautiful makeup effects.

Fdfx labs LLC has been one of the most rewarding and positive business experiences I have been a part of.

Fdfx labs will have an online e-commerce store featuring transfers, and other top secret (for now 😉) inventions, for on set makeup applications, currently in development launching in 2022.

Currently, FDFX labs has specialized in custom prosthetics and pieces for clients like 3M, creating design concepts for productions in pre-production and on set applications of prosthetics for film and television.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to creating both of my companies has been a long one! But I know it’s a marathon and not a sprint, so we give ourselves a little grace while still pushing thru.

When you start working as a freelance artist, you are faced with the large challenge of putting a monetary value to that art and without a clear business plan and path, many freelance artists lose the end goal they start with.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a freelance makeup artist. I specialize in doing makeup at a high-end professional level for film, tv, and commercial purpose.

I am known in the twin cities of Minnesota for being able to work on many different types of projects.

Including but not limited to special effects makeup and beauty makeup.

I am extremely proud of my Cidesco Diploma and education in addition to my training at Joe Blasco, Hollywood. This is what sets me apart from other makeup artists.

My education blends the worlds between special effects makeup and beauty makeup, which allows me to understand and enjoy both!

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I see success as a clear path to an end goal of me needing to create and provide to the world. I am specific when I say NEED to create because when you are truly an artist in any form, you know you need to be creating something and moving forward in your story you want to express to the world.
