Check Out Brian Curski’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Curski.

Hi Brian, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a photographer who loves to take nature, concert and sports photos. I’ve always loved capturing moments, even back in high school when I would work with the video club, but never had a professional camera until about ten years ago. I love bringing my camera on family road trips all over America, and I never mind driving a few hours to great places we have in Minnesota and Wisconsin. In 2017 I started taking sports and concert pictures for both Cumulus Media Minneapolis (KQRS/93X/Love105 my full time non-photography job) and 1013MusicReviews.com.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a fairly smooth road regarding opportunity, I’ve been very lucky there, but there are certainly challenges when trying to improve and get better. I love that when looking back through past work, it feels like every six months or so, the work takes a leap. The main struggle is motivation to keep shooting and improving and putting myself out there for opportunities. Even if taking a week off from the camera and editing, I can feel skills slipping, and I crave getting better.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m not sure if I have a specialty as far as the type of photography, but as I mentioned before, I love capturing moments. I feel happiest with my work when freezing in time something already happening, rather than creating and posing shots. I really enjoy a lot of portrait type photographers, just not something I get joy from.

When the pandemic was in full force, I needed to leave the house but shoot away from people. It lead to some nature and astrophotography shots that I am really proud of. One example is when we had 20 below degree mornings in Duluth, I drove up before sunrise and wanted to see how the world looks different when it’s that cold. It also leads to some great times sitting in a dark field, trying to capture the light of the milky way, or the international space station streaking across the sky.
I’m really proud of recent concert and event photography. I’ve been super blessed with a chance to shoot a lot of concerts since things opened up again in the last six months, including a four day rock festival in Virginia in September, as well as being able to shoot artists like Foo Fighters, Genesis, Black Label Society, Gojira and Green Day. The thrill of creating a snapshot of the action that drives people crazy with excitement and being able to recreate that with a picture with no sound is a challenge I love chasing.
Finally, I love the work I have been able to do covering the Minnesota United of Major League Soccer . Not only is soccer a unique sport to shoot, moving a lot faster than anything else, but the group of fellow United photographers is unique as well. A great combination of professionalism and fandom and it’s great seeing the work from them each week.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My wife Lisa has been my biggest motivator and cheerleader. She is the main person that helps me grow and pushes me to find new things. The rest of my family has been supportive as well with praise and a big part of the motivation to find new pretty things.

Kyle Hansen of 1013MusicReviews and RKH Images was a big part of early photography learning as well. He was a great help(removed the s) with everything from settings to how to be professional when was I was a lot less confident “on the job”.
