Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Fisher.
Hi Andrew, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hi everyone! My name is Andrew Fisher. I’m a landscape and lifestyle photographer from Texas, now living in the Midwest. I’ve been a photographer for several years now, and love sharing my photos to inspire others’ artistic side. Growing up in a family of artists, I felt as if I was meant to take a different path. My father is a graphic designer and cartoonist, while my mother specializes in portraits and watercolor. I’ve always been the active type, playing baseball all through high school, and focusing on a career in the military during college. While in college, my love for an active lifestyle quickly transformed into a love for the outdoors. I started taking road trips with my friends to National Parks, and hiking around my hometown of San Antonio, Texas. Eventually, I purchased a cheap, used camera from craigslist to capture all of our adventures. Soon after, I fell in love with photography and started focusing trips around which photos I wanted to take.
While I ultimately decided to start a career in the military, I have also been fortunate enough to continue developing my skill as a photographer. With the Air Force as my primary focus, I’ve had the opportunity to remain extremely selective about my photo projects. This helped me ease into creating a business that properly suites my interests and lifestyle. Due to my military commitment, I consider myself a professional part time photographer. This has been invaluable in producing the confidence I need to be a full time photographer at the end of my military career. I guess I didn’t realize it when I was younger, but photography would end up being how I express the artistic side that my parents passed down to me!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a photographer can be incredibly tough at times. There’s a never ending struggle between taking photos that fulfill you creatively, and taking photos that will make you money. An example of this for myself would be taking landscape images, and taking portraits. Landscape images are fulfilling to me because they get you outside, and test your ability to capture something unique. Landscapes can also be tough images to sell, whereas portraits are often taken for clients who have already booked the photoshoot. I believe that managing this aspect of photography is crucial in running your business and ensuring that you do not get burnt out on your art.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I believe that in photography, integrity plays a key role in the authenticity of your images. There is a fine line between photography and digital art. I always aim to keep my images looking natural, with minimal post processing. Digital art is incredible in its own right, but can blur the line between real and enhanced imagery. As a photographer, being in the right place at the right time is the biggest part of the battle. Sometimes you have to wait hours in order to take the perfect photo, right at sunset with the birds flying by. As a digital artist, you can take a photo of that same location, add birds in, and edit the colors to make it look like a sunset. I pride myself in being fully transparent with all of my images in order to keep the audience aware of what they are viewing.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My wife is my biggest fan, and supports me no matter what! 🙂 My parents have also supported my work endlessly, and encouraged me to continue moving forward. Having someone in your corner is so important when times are tough. There are ups and downs to any business, and creating a network of support will help get you through those downs.
