Today we’d like to introduce you to Vicky Vibrato.
Hi Vicky, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello, my name is Vicky Vibrato. I am a drag queen currently based in NJ. I am 22 years old and spent most of my childhood in Rochester, MN. As a child, I was always very feminine and flamboyant. I loved the Little Mermaid and I brought my Barbies with me everywhere. As I got older, I started to suppress myself and tried to change my identity. Growing up in a small midwest town made it hard to understand who I was and what I’m capable of. Middle and high school posed a lot of challenges and I found choir as a way to escape. I found so much joy and acceptance in music and became a successful singer during my high school career.
With the support of my parents, I made the decision to go to school for musical theatre on the east coast. Moving away allowed me to be introduced to so many other gay people and was able to see a queer community where I felt a family. This is how I was first introduced to the art of drag. Halloween of my sophomore year was the first time I tried drag and it stuck with me ever since. Through the initial lockdown of 2020, I made the decision to follow my heart and drag became my life. Now, I currently work all across New Jersey as a dancing and singing pop sensation. I love creating content for Instagram and putting together new looks for shows and photos. I’m currently in my last semester of my bachelor’s degree and will be relocating to NYC this coming summer.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Finding the person I am today has been extremely rewarding, but also very challenging. As I mentioned before, growing up in a small midwest town created many challenges I wasn’t even aware of until I moved away. The community I was raised in had no openly queer representation. This put me in a bubble of isolation, though I had friends, I still felt completely alone. I felt so much shame being a feminine male that I tried to change everything about myself. During this time, I found YouTube and discovered social media. YouTube gave me the access to see into other people’s lives in different parts of the world. I was able to see openly gay and queer people living life as their true authentic selves. During January of my freshmen year of high school, I came out as gay to my mom. After seeing fellow MN native, Connor Franta, make his coming out video, I knew I could do the same thing. Coming out at 15 forced me to grow up faster than most teenagers. On top of this, I was the only openly gay person at my high school. Going through this gave me the confidence to live each day as my true authentic self. Now, I am able to be a fierce drag queen because of that little MN boy.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a drag queen, singer, dancer, actor, and arts administrator. I am known for my high energy dance performances, fashionable looks, and my makeup skills. Not only can I kick my face, but I also sing live at my shows. I have a unique polish and aesthetic that sets me apart from other performers. I am really proud of how far I have come within my first year and a half within the drag industry. I have been able to work with some of the most established queens in New Jersey, at some of the most iconic queer bars.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t know if I believe in luck, but I do believe in working hard, and that everything happens for a reason. I have been able to accomplish so much because of my work ethic. You have to be driven and dedicated to make an impact. I have sort of created an unhealthy obsession with making a mark on the world. I think if you truly believe in your dreams and work for them, you will achieve your goals.
