Hi Sumaya, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hi everyone – I’m Sumaya and I’m a Content Creator and Real Estate Agent in Minnesota. I was born in San Diego, California and grew up in Minneapolis, Mn. My parents came to this country as refugees, to live the American Dream. My family moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota from California to become business owners. They opened one of the first Somali Malls in Minneapolis, Mn called “ Al Karama Mall” Located in Cedar Riverside. My family motivated me to become an entrepreneur at an early age in life.
After high school, I moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue my dream in Fashion Marketing. I was living my dream from working on fashion shows to modeling for big beauty campaigns. I always loved marketing whether it was helping small businesses like my families or partnering up with big brands. It was always so exciting.
My Social Media started when I documented everything I did on my social media platform called “Instagram”. Back then, Instagram was still new and not many people were on it. I grew such a large following over time. I’ve become known as “S.K the influencer” on all my social media platforms. I started working with huge brands and traveling all over the country.
SK the influencer grew a large following on social media. I speak about Beauty, Lifestyle, diversity, Marketing and Real Estate. My goal is to inspire young girls through all aspects of my content from beauty, fashion, lifestyle, and Business, Real Estate.
During the pandemic I started two business, One a social media marketing agency named “The Branding by Sk” and I also got my real estate license and launched “TherealtorSk”.
The branding by SK was launched due to the social media marketing representation in my community. I wanted to help teach entrepreneurs and brands how to market to their audience through social media marketing. With my background in social media influence, I wanted to teach the importance of marketing on social media. From branding and content creation, social media posts, logos, website design. The branding by sk is what you need to take your business to the next level.
The Realtor SK Was also born during the pandemic as well. I always loved real estate and during the pandemic was the perfect time to take the course and study for that hard exam. (Yes its a complicated exam) What encouraged me to get my real estate license was again seeing the lack of diversity and representation in the black Muslim community. While helping my family find the perfect home, we couldn’t barely find anyone that could direct us in the right direction. Being Muslim meant that we had to avoid taking interest “Riba” on mortgage, Which is forbidden in Islam. After doing some research and finding Islamic finance options in America it was so satisfying to know that we can finally start building generational wealth through real estate and become homeowners in America. I fell in love with the process of finding the right home and financing options for my family and that encouraged me to become a real estate agent to help more families like mine. I strive to be the agent that makes a difference in the industry by encouraging people to believe in their potential and the possibility to increase their wealth through the ownership of the place that they will call home.
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference. Just do it, Launch that business and take that extra course to pursue your dream career.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all, being black and Muslim in America meant that I had to work twice as hard as my peers to achieve my goals.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
1. Ambition
To be successful, you need ambition. Ambitious people will see that they are capable of doing their best and being the best and what they do.
2. Courage
A lot of the time, most people do not achieve success because of fear. Many people have a fear of failing and this is what can stop them from achieving.
3. Commitment
When someone is committed, they will have the determination to achieve what they want and will keep trying to reach that goal.
4. Integrity
In order to succeed, integrity is an important trait to have. When you are honest, people will believe in you, they can help you and you can also take pride in knowing that you are honest with yourself and others.
