Meet Leah Earl of Mecca Tattoo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Earl.

Hi Leah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have spent most of my life creating and appreciating art. I have always admired the hard work and dedication it takes to be an artist.

I am extremely fortunate to have such a loving family and partner. When I told them that I was working toward a career as a tattoo artist they were nothing but supportive.

Before I started as an apprentice artist at Mecca Tattoo, I was working in a very different field. I went to MNSU, Mankato and obtained two B.S. Degrees. The first in Urban and Regional Planning and the second in Geography. I began a career as an AutoCAD and GIS specialist and worked with engineering firms and utility companies to design public infrastructure. After working this career path for about 5 years I decided that I needed something different for my life.

There was a defining moment a couple years ago that really put this change in motion. One night, I was at a friend’s bonfire and someone started talking about how they believe life and death works. In short, they believe that you just keep reliving the same life over and over. The following days after that bonfire I reflected on my own life and asked myself if I would want to relive this life over and over. My answer was no, not really. This was the defining moment when I decided I needed to do something different with my life. I am doing everything in my power to make the change I want for myself. I spend hours everyday scouring the internet and books for design ideas, admiring work from other artists, drawing, painting, and digital art.

I started my apprenticeship at Mecca Tattoo in June of 2021 and began tattooing in August of 2021.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road. As an artist I am really good at being my worst critic and underestimating my abilities.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a new tattooer, I have not chosen a style preference, yet. However, I have gravitated towards botanical, nature themes, and ornamental pieces for my clients. I put out pre-drawn designs every couple months and that showcases my evolving style. I still and always will have so much to learn and grow as an artist and tattooer.

How do you think about luck?
I have been extremely fortunate to have found a place to learn and grow at Mecca Tattoo. My mentors Damien Voss Friesz and Megan Hoogland have been incredibly supportive in my early tattooing career. I have worked very hard to be where I am today and continue to work hard each day to improve my abilities.
