Today we’d like to introduce you to Maygen & The Birdwatcher.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We met back in 2017 on a gig we were both booked on. Maygen was singing backup vocals and Noah was playing guitar. Over the weeks of the gig we quickly bonded over our drive to create original music. We both felt like we needed a partner to pursue what we individually wanted in music and found that, though we both have distinct interests and taste, we had a similar drive and passion.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course, having different interests like we do, creates plenty of interesting forks. We have yet to encounter any major obstacles, outside of the usual. The issues we face have to do with having such diverse, and sometimes conflicting interests, which can make the creative process involved, but we think that’s what makes our sound special; it is an ebb and flow of contrast and compromise, and championing each other’s visions.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We’re a musical duo who specialize in the sounds of Americana. Surprisingly, we are known for bringing our banjo to Country gigs, which I guess isn’t very common anymore! We’re very proud of our latest album, Moonshine, that was released last October and earned us Midwest Country Music Awards for Album of the Year and Americana Artist of the Year!
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The lesson we’ve learned (and are still learning) is the importance of laying down one’s ego. It goes without saying that in the world of music, it’s not hard to run into some intense personalities. Sometimes that confidence can feel like it gets in the way of strong collaboration. We know the delicate nature of a creative relationship and would never want to see someone’s ego wreck something potentially beautiful.
