Today we’d like to introduce you to Shakia McDavid.
Shakia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After graduating from college, I moved to China for work. Once I had completed tasks for the project I was on I started to explore the city. A friend I worked with parents co-owned a hair factory and so I started to explore options & what I could do with that. I set up a visit to her family’s factory and posted it on my personal Facebook page. The request to ship back hair extensions was overwhelming and 2 days prior to leaving I had over 4k in my PayPal; all wanting hair extensions. once I completed my work contract, I bought into the factory, moved back to the states and everything took off from there. About 6 years later here I am. Shipped to over 14 countries and a store location. I now also help those who want to start businesses explore their options as well; no matter the industry.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth road? What’s that?! It has been a journey. Sometimes I wanted to say “Im done” & others I was like “wow, I’m doing it.” My biggest struggle was my business grew super quick and I needed to learn how to keep up! Though I had helped large corporations with their project management, operations, marketing etc. It was different doing your own thing. Also, once I expanded to helping others with business advice; that turned into another business itself; so I really had to learn time management.
COVID also. Due to the bulk of my business being wholesale and import/export I had to deal with not receiving product, boxes being stuck in customs for months at a time and tons of customers who were upset with delays altogether. Not to mention; stylist use the bulk of their products; so when they were slow or couldn’t be in business due to state mandates, it def. slowed things down for me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m kind of known as a serial Entrepreneur. I now own 4 businesses and it’s kinda cool.
I would have to say my specialty is def. marketing. Ultimately, that’s what my degree is in and I love helping others with dreams & goals meet them.
I am most proud of being able to reach back and help my parents. I think it’s so cool that now I’m the one paying for vacays and buying my mom and dad fancy gifts.
One of the things that set me apart is I’m ME. I’m not one of those people who turn on their “office voice” when it’s time for business. I keep It real all the time and I think honestly those who work with me, that’s what they love most & respect most.
What matters most to you? Why?
Cultivating relationships. I think it’s super important to build new relationships with all types of people and also sustaining and growing the current ones you have.
