Today we’d like to introduce you to Latife Whittington.
Hi Latife, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Germany and moved to Southern California at the age of 13 where I spent my high school years and also attained my BFA in Photography. I’m pretty new to the Twin Cities area and I moved to St. Paul in the fall of last year for an amazing job opportunity. This job opportunity not only benefits me as a professional but gives me the chance to give back to a community in need. I work at The Sanneh Foundation as a Multimedia & Graphics VISTA through AmeriCorps, dealing with all things photography, graphics, video, & social media for the foundation. The Sanneh Foundation does amazing work in the Twin Cities Metro area up to St. Cloud, providing the communities with Food Distributions, mentors in schools K-12, free professional summer camps, and more. This opportunity has not only opened up doors to influential people and experiences but it has also been fulfilling knowing that my work has an impact on communities!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While I have moved from another country to the US, it was still a bit of a struggle moving to St. Paul as I don’t have any family and friends in the area. It felt like I was starting from scratch again, getting used to different scenery, and making new friendships. However, after a while of working at The Sanneh Foundation, I was able to make many friendships and important connections.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a professional photographer. As I mentioned previously, I currently work as a Multimedia & Graphics VISTA for The Sanneh Foundation to gain experience and give back to the community. For the foundation, my position entails photography, videography, graphic design, and social media management. Outside of the foundation, I’m a portrait photographer. I love doing all things portraits, from headshots to fashion photography. I’ve also been experimenting with self-portraits which you can find on my website!
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I guess one thing that is always surprising to people is that I was born and raised in Germany and still speak german fluently. I don’t mention it as often anymore since I’ve been living in the US for about 10 years and counting.
