Meet Luke Hendrickson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke Hendrickson.

Hi Luke, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I guess it started as a small child, where my mom’s records were constantly spinning on the turntable. I’ve always enjoyed singing and memorizing lyrics. There was choir in high school, playing the bass guitar in metal bands, discovering my love of country music and eventually using the acoustic guitar to help tell stories and songs that I had begun attempting to write.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Covid would be the obvious answer here. I’ve been a full-time working musician for almost 5 years now. I have a wife and children to take care of, so any disruption in my ability to work can become a major obstacle. Other than that, there are the normal perils of walking into unknown bars and venues, fretting over how I’ll be received…. will anyone like my songs? Will they bother turning off the TV that I have to stand in front of?

The challenges can be many, but it also becomes easier to seek out and hone in on the joys.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
It’s strange talking about myself in this way, but I suppose I am very driven. Stubborn. I’m proud of everything I’ve recorded and put out into the world. I’m proud of the hours I put in…. making calls, booking shows, driving for days and weeks on end. Every gig is not a smash success. I have bad nights and temporary doubts, but they are only temporary. I’m proud about making my family proud.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
That’s something that I don’t think I can attempt to answer or predict. I know that people don’t just “like” music and art… they NEED it. In that way, I have some security. Logistically, though, something like a pandemic or other unplanned emergency can come about that really messes up plans. Income might fluctuate, but the music won’t go away.
