Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Lucia.
Hi Anna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
If I was a teenager looking into the future and saw myself now, I’d be absolutely shocked. When I was a kid there was barely a moment where I wasn’t drawing, creating, writing, or daydreaming up weird stories and creations. However, by the time I hit my teenage years depression crawled in and took over my life and the artist I am remained lost well into my mid-twenties. I learned to navigate life with the haze of depression misting over me, and while I did things like fall in love over and over, have my heart broken over and over, escaped abusive situations, and worked my ass off to have a normal life, I was always led back to the path of art. It’s who I am at my core, and I’ll keep doing anything and everything that brings my soul out from inside of me. I’m mostly self taught and have experimented with many different mediums, but my current mediums are clay art and accessories, acrylic paintings, and collage art. A couple of years ago, I started doing art markets with The Haunted Basement, and it led me to a network of incredible artists and individuals in the Twin Cities. I’m lucky enough to keep finding or being invited to markets and art shows that I am always excited to be at, and I want to keep riding this wave as long as the Cities finds me relevant.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest struggles I’ve faced as an artist in the Twin Cities all comes from me – this area is ripe with incredible artists and talent all over. Comparing yourself to all these people can be your worst enemy. You put what you really want to do on the backseat, and try to figure out how to be as good as or better than whatever folks you’re comparing yourself to. So of course that slows you down because you’re putting your energy into something that isn’t going to benefit you or anyone. If you’re able to cut that out, however, then you can get on the path you need to be on.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in polymer clay jewelry where I use different techniques, mix different clays together, and use gold findings and brass. Earrings has been a huge focus of mine because of how they frame the face – and as an artist, I’ve always been very focused on drawing and painting portraits of people, so creating these earring adornments is just another way to do that. Aside from that, I make collage art and as previously mentioned, acrylic paintings. All of these mediums are meant to make the most mysterious, darkest, outcast parts of you understood from the inside out – and not in the typical shock factor way. Sometimes all it takes to make you feel like yourself is looking at something bright, mysterious, and electrifyingly pleasing to your eye.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Not to lose yourself in others. That includes losing yourself in comparison to others, or in falling in love with someone, or in doing what you think you should do, rather than what you truly want to do.
