Life & Work with Ok Jess

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ok Jess.

Hi Jess, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Between 2020-2021, I went through a separation/divorce. I found myself alone on Valentine’s Day in 2021, so to pass the time and make myself feel slightly better, I spent the day making a short, stupid, little song. In the following days, I decided to record a video for it (just for fun). I posted the video to TikTok before going to bed one night, fully expecting no one to see it (I had no following at the time). The next morning I woke up to the video having over 200K views and that’s when I realized that there might be an audience for my satire music. Now, a year and three months later, I somehow have 253K followers on Tiktok, and 128K followers on Instagram. I am so incredibly grateful for everyone who supports me and my content!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall, I’d say it has been a pretty smooth road! The main struggles for me have been, 1.) not letting the numbers I see dictate the value of my content, 2.) not letting myself get sucked into the endless void that is the internet, and 3.) not taking unkind comments to heart. I am grateful that the vast majority of interactions that I see are very positive though!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am most known for parodies/satire original music and occasional comedy skits. Specifically, my YMCA parody which has been viewed over 37.5 million times between Instagram and Tiktok. (This number absolutely blows my mind).

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
The biggest risk, in this case, is simply exposing my personality and humor to millions of people and allowing them to judge it. People are incredibly bold when they’re behind a screen and have nothing to lose. Sometimes, it turns out great. Other times it can suck. Any creator can attest to their love/hate relationship with the internet.
